Barca to batter the French

Barcelona have been in good nick on the road this tournament, beating Tottenham and PSV Eindhoven away. Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic and Philippe Coutinho were all given a rest in Barca’s La Liga match on the weekend by starting on the bench, with an eye to this clash in France. Lyon are in good form themselves, having beaten PSG a few weeks ago to end the Paris side’s formidable streak without losing, so they have the pedigree to more than match it with Europe’s best at home. Lyon, like Barcelona, were unbeaten in the group stages, but Lyon did so with five consecutive draws in their last five games, conceding 11 goals. They also had one of the lowest possession rates in the tournament, while Barca boast one of the highest. The Spanish side will dominate play in this match, and that will translate into a domineering win.

All signs point to a draw

Liverpool haven’t lost at Anfield in the Champions League since October 2014. That is a period of zero lossess, 14 wins and five draws. However, Bayern haven’t lost in the Champions League on the road in eight matches. Concerning here for the Reds is that they’ll be without their defensive talisman Virgil van Dijk. He is serving a one game ban and back up defenders Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren will also likely be unavailable. It looks as if Fabinho, usually a midfielder, will fill in next to Joel Matip as he has done on occasion before. That means Liverpool will have to be extra careful at set pieces, somewhere van Dijk excels as a defender, among many other situations. Bayern Munich have scored the most goals from set pieces in this season’s competition. Liverpool’s defensive hole suggests they’re really going to battle to not let Bayern get the better of them, but there’s something about Anfield and Europe that produces special showings from Liverpool, and to escape this one with a draw will likely take a stand out performance.

Ronaldo to return to UCL form

Atletico Madrid have been very up and down in the Champions League. They were smashed by Borussia Dortmund but then performed strongly in the return tie, while drawing to Real Madrid and Barcelona at home early in the La Liga season. However, two weeks ago they were beaten 3-1 at home by Real Madrid, and this is where Juventus will be looking to for inspiration during this match. They beat Manchester United away and also AC Milan and Lazio on the road this season. Madrid manager Diego Simeone has a good record against Italian teams in the Champions League while Juventus have just as good a record winning knock out games away in Europe. The kicker for The Wolf is that Cristiano Ronaldo has been quiet of late in the Champions League AND against Atletico. That’s not going to last. Ronaldo will bounce back and lead Juventus to a win.
