United fans showed their first signs of unrest during the 2-0 win over Sunderland last weekend.
A large part of the Old Trafford crowed groaned loudly when United played balls back to keeper David De Gea from as far away as the half-way line.
But ahead of tonight's game at Newcastle, Van Gaal called for patience.
He said: "You have to see at that moment the solution for the players.
"Sometimes the solution is to play back and, sometimes in spite of there may being another solution, the players has not seen that solution.
"You have to give the credit of your doubt to the player and you have to support him because when you make a mistake in defence, it is more or less normally always a goal.
"So you have to see that also. Also, as a fan, you have to see that.
"But I agree with the fans that we don't have to use so much the goalkeeper because I have seen also moments that we can play in a higher tempo without interfering with the goalkeeper."
United are currently fourth and have only lost one of their last seven Premier League games but there is real concern among the fans about their performances, Angel Di Maria in particular.
But Van Gaal warns it could be a year before United see the best of the £59.7m British record transfer.
He said: "I think it counts for all the players that we have bought, the first season is always difficult.
"For me it is not a big surprise, it is more a big surprise when he adapted as quickly as possible.
"We have to give him time, not just Di Maria but all the players. You have to manage so many aspects. Not just the game, but the culture.
"The general answer is one year but you can't give a general answer."
Van Gaal's opposite number John Carver says the Dutchman missed a trick not signing Daryl Janmaat last summer.
Janmaat was an ever-present for Manchester United boss Van Gaal's Netherlands' side on their way to the World Cup semi-finals.
"He's a top, top player who has been outstanding for us," said Carver.
"He's a good defender who likes to get on the front foot and is actually second on the list of assists for full-backs behind Leighton Baines.
"I think Manchester United had more pressing issues to sort out, but even as a wing back, Daryl would have fitted into their system nicely."
