La Liga Tips: Atletico Madrid can squeak a win to keep title bid on track

Real Sociedad have failed to beat any of the top four this season - good news for the La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid, as Dan Fitch previews the Spanish midweek action.

Barcelona were favourites going into this weekend, but could not beat the leaders Atletico Madrid at home, with the game ending 0-0. Real Madrid then passed up the chance to go top on Sunday, when they drew 2-2 at home to fourth placed Sevilla.

It's now Atletico who are favourites to land their second La Liga title under Diego Simeone, at odds of 1.78Real Madrid are the second favourites at 4.0, with Barcelona at 4.8 and Sevilla, who are six points behind Atletico, way out at 220.0.

Barca will go top at least temporarily

Barca are third in the table and two points behind Atletico, with three matches of the season to go.

The first of those games comes away at Levante and as Barcelona have the advantage of playing before the two teams above them, they can go top of La Liga and really apply some pressure.

Pressure, is not something that Barcelona have coped with very well themselves. Prior to the weekend's 0-0 home draw with Atletico, they had lost their previous match at the Camp Nou 2-1 against Granada.

Yet it would be a huge shock if Barcelona failed to win this one, with Levante without a win in five games (D1 L4) and having already secured enough points to be safe from relegation. Barcelona are 1.8 to win half-time/full-time.

Sociedad record does not inspire confidence

It's Atletico who perhaps have the toughest fixture of the title contenders, as they host a Real Sociedad side that still need points to secure European qualification.

Of the four teams still in with a chance of winning the title, it is Atletico that can be happiest with their result over the weekend. Yet Felipe had a great chance to win the game for Atletico, which would have been a huge step towards them lifting the title.

Atletico's form has been patchy over recent months, which has seen a seemingly unassailable lead dwindle to a slight one, but they have proved reliable at home of late. Simeone's side are unbeaten in their last five home games (W4 D1), winning each of the last four, with the draw coming against Real Madrid.

Sociedad beat Elche 2-0 at the weekend, but their record against the top four is not inspiring (P7 D2 L5, losing the reverse fixture 2-0. Back Atletico to pick up a vital win at 1.77.

Granada can cause Madrid problems

Real Madrid look set to end the season without a trophy, unless they quickly get back to winning ways.

Last week Real's Champions League ambitions came to an end when they lost 2-0 in the away-leg of their semi-final against Chelsea, which saw them defeated 3-1 on aggregate. Domestically, they have been continually throwing away the opportunity to retain their La Liga title, with Madrid having drawn three of their last five league games (W2).

They twice had to come from behind in order to draw at home with Sevilla on Sunday night and now face a potentially though match against unpredictable Granada. Tenth in La Liga, Granada recently put a dent in Barcelona's title hopes with a surprise win.

Granada have the disadvantage of playing Betis on Monday night, with the result not yet known at the time of writing. Madrid should of course win this one, but that's been true of a lot of their games of late. Both teams to score seems a safe bet at 1.95.
