ESSENDON has announced its coaching selection panel to find James Hird’s replacement – with a notable omission.
Legendary four-time Essendon premiership coach Kevin Sheedy was overlooked for the five-man panel tasked with finding the club’s new senior coach.
Hall of Fame journalist and former Herald Sun chief football writer Mike Sheahan was surprised Sheedy was not selected on the coaching sub-committee.
“There’s a bloke called Kevin Sheedy, currently an employee of the Essendon Football Club. Wouldn’t you think he’d be co-opted to something like this?” Sheahan told Fox Footy’s AFL360 on Monday night.
“I reckon it’s almost insulting to Sheedy.”
Sheedy is employed as Essendon’s general manager of club projects and innovation.
He recently said Hird’s unhappy exit as Essendon coach did not sit well with him.
The Bombers sub-committee will be chaired be chief executive Xavier Campbell and include football director Chris Heffernan, who played in the Bombers’ 2000 premiership team, former captain Neale Daniher, Hawthorn premiership player Brad Sewell and the club’s general manager of people and culture Lisa Lawry.
Melbourne Storm premiership coach Craig Bellamy will also be consulted to help the Bombers select their next coach.

The Bombers want to appoint a new coach by the end of October.
“We have assembled the sub-committee and established a thorough recruitment process to ensure we can appoint the best person available to be the next senior coach of the Essendon Football Club,” Campbell said in a statement on Monday night.
“When we sat down to form the panel we wanted to ensure the final sub-committee had diverse experience across the AFL industry.
“This is a particularly important decision for the football club.
“The process will take several weeks, and will conclude with the Board’s endorsement of the successful candidate.”
Essendon is expected to make contact with West Coach premiership coach John Worsfold, who last week changed his mind about a return to coaching.
Worsfold will also be considered for the vacancy at Adelaide, where he is working as a fill-in coaching director to help the Crows’ football department and caretaker coach Scott Camporeale after the death of Phil Walsh.
Interim coach Matthew Egan last week indicated he would not be a candidate, while dual Geelong premiership coach Mark Thompson said he was not prepared to return to the Bombers, who he coached in 2014 while Hird served a one-year ban over the club’s supplements program.
