A battle between two teams in utter crisis, it has been a long time since either the Rabbitohs or Tigers have tasted victory. With both coaches under immense pressure, each side needs to step up in what is really a desperate situation for both clubs.
Selection NotesSouths welcome back George Burgess and Kyle Turner with Paul Carter dropped and Hymel Hunt out with a season-ending pec injury. Kirisome Auva’a starts in the centres. Adam Reynolds is in doubt with a jaw injury. Jason Taylor has dropped only Nathan Milone with Tim Simona returning from suspension.
NRL 2016: The Ultimate Guide
HistorySouth Sydney have won 15 of 26 against the Wests Tigers all-time and have won 7 of their last 9. The two teams split their two matches evenly last year with Souths winning 20-6 early in the season before the Tigers turned the tables with a 34-6 victory. The teams have met 11 times at ANZ with Souths holding a 6-5 edge. Six of the last seven matches have tallied more than 38 points. The Tigers have former Rabbitoh Tim Grant starting at bookend while coach Jason Taylor is a former Bunnies mentor. James Tedesco has scored 5 tries in 6 games against Souths.
Form
South Sydney have dropped three straight and have won just 1 of their last 6 since two dominant wins in their opening two matches. Their 11.67 points per game over the last six matches is a clear second worst while their 25.5 points conceded is third worst. Three of their last four losses have been by 20 points or more. Souths have fallen to 11th on the ladder with an attacking rank of 9th and a defensive rank of 10th. The Wests Tigers have lost six straight and have the 10thbest attack and 14th ranked defence. They come into this off a 60-6 loss in Canberra and now sit 14th with a 2-6 record. Since Round 3 they have the worst defence and third worst attack in the NRL.
Key Matchup
Greg Inglis v James Tedesco. Inglis has had an exts Tedesco. Inglis has had an extremely quiet year to date but with Souths in dire straits he needs to pick up his game this week. He looks tired and beaten-up but with their season on the line he must find. Tedesco was desperately unlucky to miss out on Test selection and has been the only consistent, high-level player the Tigers have. If the Tigers are to escape their rut, it will be on Tedesco’s back.
Stats That Matter
South Sydney are 2-6 ATS with a 4-4 over-under number while the Wests Tigers are 3-5 ATS with a 4-4 total number. Underdogs of 6.5 or more off a loss are 58-40 ATS Rounds 5-10 since 2008. Those teams are 5-9 ATS when they conceded 40 points the week prior. Teams who conceded 50 points the week prior are 31-18 ATS since 2008 (30-19 over) while those who conceded 60 are 5-1 ATS (4-2 over). Teams off six straight losses are 30-51 ATS since 2008 with a 47-34 under number. Souths have failed to cover their last five after conceding 30 points in a game while the Tigers are 3-6 ATS in their last nine in the same situation. Souths have covered just 3 of their last 12 at ANZ but have covered 3 of their last 4 when favoured by over a converted try. The Tigers have covered just 3 of their last 11 at the ground.
Final Thoughts
These are two bad teams who are well and truly off their coaches. The Wests Tigers hit rock bottom last Saturday though while South Sydney are still tearing themselves up. Teams off monster floggings tend to bounce back the week after and it would take a game punter indeed to lay 7.5 points to be with the Bunnies. James Tedesco should be stinging after being overlooked for Test duty and seems set for a big game with a big upset brewing.
