Wales captain Sam Warburton remains confident that his injury-hit side can challenge for glory at the Rugby World Cup.

Head coach Warren Gatland is having to plan without first-choice scrum-half Rhys Webb (ankle) and British & Irish Lions full-back Leigh Halfpenny (knee) after they were injured against Italy last weekend.

However, flanker Warburton believes that Wales have players ready to step up to fill the gaps left, with Eli Walker and Mike Phillips earning late call-ups and Dan Biggar preparing to take over the goalkicking duties from Halfpenny.

He told reporters: "We've still got an absolutely fantastic chance to win the World Cup.
"If we want to be a side that wins the World Cup, it's got to be more than a 15-man team, it's a squad effort. So it's not a life or death situation.

"Leigh will be a massive loss for any side in world rugby, but to have Dan Bigger, who's been having high percentages for the Ospreys in the last seven or eight years, is a great replacement.

"And from a scrum-half point of view to have Mike Phillips coming in - a British Lion with 80 or 90 caps, in his third World Cup - you probably couldn't have a better replacement."

Wales face a tough test if they want to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup, having been placed in Pool A alongside hosts England, Australia, as well as Fiji and Uruguay.

The Welsh are available at 4/7 to be eliminated in the group stage, 3/1 to lose in the last eight and 6/1 to be beaten in the semi-finals.
