Roger Federer v Stan Wawrinka (7:10pm)
They have won gold together at the Olympic Games and led their country to Davis Cup success but tonight Federer and Wawrinka will battle it out for a spot in the final. When the draw came out few gave Federer a chance but following wins over Berdych and Nishikori capped off by the exits of Murray and Djokovic he is now the firm favourite. His performance against Zverev was clinical to say the least but take nothing away from Stan whose performance was equally impressive when you consider it came against the dangerous Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The Swiss compatriots have met on 21 occasions with Federer holding a commanding 18-3 advantage. A closer look reveals that Stan’s three victories have come on clay. Federer is 13-0 on hard courts and there can be no hiding from this record for Wawrinka. There is no doubt that Stan has been the most dangerous player over the last three years where he has won each of the three Grand Slam Finals he has contested. That being said, Federer poses a very different threat to Novak and Murray – the men he has had great success against. Unlike the current top two players in the world Federer will not retreat behind the baseline. He will not give Wawrinka any time to set his feet and tee off and will continuously look to shift him around the court. The key to Federer’s success against his countryman in the past has been his ability to change the pace of rallies with his variety – slice backhands, drop shot, net approaches… you name it and Federer has it.
We will be treated to some spectacle thanks to their contrasting styles but The Wolf cannot look past Roger. He knows how to get Stan out of his comfort zone and his ability to get to the net will prevent Stan from playing his shots. Federer had a spring in his step when Novak was knocked out and grew a leg when Murray was beaten. He will not let up on the chance to win a 18th major!
Best Bet: Federer WIN ($1.73)
Value Bet: Sets Federer 3-1 ($4.50)
1st Set Scorecast: Federer 6-3 ($6.00)
Coco Vandeweghe v Venus Williams (2:10pm)
After having to withdraw from a lead in tournament in Auckland Venus Williams could never have imagined herself making it this far. Well she has, and she will take on a fellow American in the free swinging Coco Vandeweghe. Coco’s giant killing run continued in the quarters. En route to her first Grand Slam semi finals appearance she has defeated Vinci and Bouchard (both former Grand Slam finalists) before taking out world number one and defending champion Angelique Kerber. It didn’t stop there as French Open champion Muguruza was next on the receiving end of Coco’s relentless power game. For Venus, it is her first time in the semi’s here since 2001 and she is seeking her first Grand Slam victory since 2008. The Wolf told us to have a little something on at the $21 prior to her win over Pavlyuchenkova and Coco is another woman who she can beat, and has beat. Their only meeting came last year at Rome on clay with Venus coming out a straight sets winner. Clay has never been a good surface for Venus which will give her even more confidence heading into this one. Both ladies will look to dominate by serving well and playing from on the baseline but with the start on offer for Venus, Wolfy says we should be on. Venus in three tight sets.
Best Bet: Over 22.5 games ($1.91)
Value Bet: Sets Venus 2-1 ($4.00)
1st Set Correct Score: 7-6 ($5.00)
Mirjana Lucic-Baroni v Serena Williams (4:00pm)
In what can only be described as remarkable 6 of the 8 semi-finalists at this year’s Australian Open are aged in their 30’s! Serena and Lucic Baroni last met on tour almost 20 years ago in 1998 at Wimbledon. Serena triumphed on that occasion and has been on a mission. In both the men’s and women’s draws the veterans have capitalised on the early exits of some of their younger and more fancied opponents. The Williams sisters along with Federer and Nadal share the same mental fortitude that has seen them win so many big matches and The Wolf says it will ring true again in this one. Serena has a remarkable 28-5 record in Grand Slam semi finals and after her performance against Konta in the quarters there really will be no stopping her in this one. The Williams sisters will meet in a 9th Grand Slam Final.
Best Bet: Under 18.5 games ($1.95)
