Transfers Latest: Gareth Bale 6/4 to sign for Manchester United

Is Gareth Bale's future about to be settled with a sensational move to Manchester United? Max Liu reports on the odds behind the latest Premier League transfer rumours...

Gareth Bale is 6/4 to sign for Manchester United following reports the club will give up on Jadon Sancho and offer the Welshman a short-term deal instead.

United have been trying to sign Sancho since the start of the transfer window and, although they have agreed terms and agents' fees, they remain unwilling to meet Borussia Dortmund's £110m valuation of the player.

The transfer window closes on 5 October but the Red Devils want to wrap up their business long before deadline and are now looking at alternatives to the England forward.

Bale is said to be a leading option. He is out of favour at Real Madrid and Betfair Ambassadors Rivaldo and Dimitar Berbatov have in recent weeks both urged him to find a new club. They may try to sign him on loan, with the option to buy, although Madrid would reportedly want an immediate sale for around £18.5m.

Tottenham, the club Bale left for Madrid in 2012, are 11/4 to bring back Bale. Their manager, Jose Mourinho, is a Bale-admirer and is rumoured to have tried to sign him for Manchester United in 2017.

The Welshman is 15/2 to sign for a MLS team.

United tried to sign him at least twice in the past but today there will be those who would regard his signing now as a backward step for the club.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer there is a clear sense of playing style at United, with an emphasis on youth and pace. The club has also tried to move away from the kind of scattergun transfer policy that saw them land big names, including Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Alexis Sanchez, who contributed little.

On the other hand, Bale is still only 31 and could add nous and big game experience to a young United squad. He has plenty to offer and, when he plays, he tends to perform well.

Bale is not the only player who could make the move from the Bernabeu to Old Trafford in this window. United are believed to be preparing a bid for Serge Reguilon. He spent last season on loan at Sevilla where he impressed United in their Europa League semi-final against the Spaniards.

Liverpool still targeting Bayern midfielder

Liverpool, meanwhile, are still hoping to sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich. The German champions get their season underway on Friday night but Alcantara may not be part of it.

The Spain international is out of contract at the end of the season and Jurgen Klopp wants to add him to the Premier League champions' midfield. For that reason, Alcantara is 1/3 to join the Reds, although United 3/1 are also believed to be interested along with Barcelona 10/3.
