Giants v Lions – Friday 7.05pm, BlacktownRemarkably, if the Giants win this match, they will very likely get a Grand Final spot (provided the Crows don’t absolutely thump the Pies by several goals) despite losing their opening two matches. On the other side of the ledger, the Lions have pretty much played themselves out of a second straight Grand Final after a woeful performance against the Pies last round. This match is shaping up to be a dour battle between two sides with everything on the line; two sides with strangling defences supported by industrious midfields with two-way runners.
The Wolf is leaning slightly towards a Giants side full of momentum getting the chocolates in front of a raucous home crowd, but it could be one of those matches where every single point is crucial.
Best Bet: Total Points Under ($1.87)
Other Bet: Triple Margin 15.5 Any Other Result ($1.65)
Dockers v Blues – Saturday 2.05pm, FremantleThis match has the potential to be an absolute snoozefest. Both sides this season have lacked forward lines with any cohesion or potency, and do not bat very deep through midfield. While it is the only dead rubber of the round, there will be a number of players who will be playing for their spot at the club next season- you get the sense this will be a very physical and inside-style encounter. There will be a number of Blues who should be very worried about their place next year, after a horrid season that the Wolf sadly predicted in the preseason, despite their favouritism for the flag.
Wolfie isn’t overly keen for a play in this one, but the Blues look to be good value against a slower side that they match up far better against. They showed some glimpses of good footy against the Crows last round and they have a couple of potential game breakers up forward that the Dockers certainly do not.
Best Bet: Total Points Under ($1.87)
Value Bet: Carlton WIN ($2.45)
Bulldogs v Demons – Saturday 7.10pm, Footscray
Katie Brennan is back! In a HUGE boost for the Doggies ahead of the most important match in their 6 year history, their skipper and forward spearhead has returned after an ankle injury in round 3. Sadly though, for both the Demons and AFLW fans alike, Melbourne midfielder Melissa Hickey has done her ACL and will miss the rest of the season. Her leadership, grunt work and assured disposal is a crucial cog in the Melbourne machine, but there certainly is some quality depth at the Dees that can step up in her absence.
Unlike other sides in the AFL, these two clubs have history dating back to 2013, where they began playing off in exhibition games; and it is safe to say Saturday night’s clash in the biggest one yet. The Dees players certainly have the edge when it comes to big-game experience, whilethe Doggies wilted against the pressure GWS placed on them when their season was on the line last round. With the Bulldogs winning 5 of 6 first terms, and 5 of 6 first halves; the Wolf is looking for some extra value with the HT/FT double. The Dogs might get off to a good start, but Wolfie thinks the poise and experience of the Demons midfield will overrun them in the second half, and secure themselves a Grand Final spot.
Best Bet: Melbourne WIN ($1.85)
Value Bet: HT/FT Double: Bulldogs/Demons ($6.75)
Magpies v Crows – Sunday 2.35pm, Olympic ParkIf the 2017 premiers, the Crows, are to make the Grand Final again, they need a big win over the Magpies in Melbourne. While that is certainly a possibility, a lot hinges on which Collingwood side shows up- the manic one that destroyed the Demons in Alice Springs, or the arrogant, slothful one that succumbed to the Dockers by 13 points. It was certainly the manic one that showed up last round against a shell-shocked Lions side; this was despite nothing on the line for the Pies and everything on the line for the Lions. The Crows represent a bigger challenge, however, and the likelihood of heavy rain on Sunday certainly suits the Crows much better; they are much more ferocious and cleaner on the inside, and with Erin Phillips in the square clunking marks the Magpies look like they are a touch short on class. It is hard to see a defender who can match her either in the air, or on the ground- let alone both!
It is a hard game to judge, but with -5.5, the Wolf will be siding with a Crows side who look to be returning to the form they showed at this time last year.
Best Bet: Adelaide -5.5 ($1.90)
Value Bet: Adelaide 25+ ($6.00)
Prop Bet: Erin Phillips 3+ goals
