Mikel Arteta looks to be the next manager of Arsenal football club following some sharp moves on the Betfair Exchange market this morning.

Once backed at 11.00 to get the job, Arteta is short odds-on at 1.20 to be named as Unai Emery's permanent. Other bookmakers have suspended betting but customers can still take a position on the Exchange.

Photos circulating on Twitter show Arsenal managing director Vinai Venkatesham and club lawyer Huss Fahmy leaving Arteta's house at 1am on Monday morning.

The Gunners installed former player Freddie Ljungberg on a temporary basis following Emery's sacking but the club have picked up just one win in the sequence and put in a lacklustre showing at home to Manchester City yesterday, losing 3-0.

The Spaniard finished his playing career at the club and is currently assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, where he has been part of two title wins. He was said to be unhappy about a mid-season move but those moves in the market suggest he has changed his mind.

Arteta would take over a side sat ninth in the table after picking up five wins from the first 17 Premier League games of the season. All hope is not lost, however, as the London side are just seven points off Chelsea, the fourth-placed side.

Arsenal are 18.00 to end the season in the top four.
