Both of these sides have work to do to emerge from the Confederations Cup group stage after disappointing results in the opening round of matches. New Zealand were swept aside 2-0 by the hosts Russia, while Mexico needed a last-gasp leveller to snatch a point against Portugal.

New Zealand have failed to score in their last three matches, and at the back end of last year, they couldn't even score in a World Cup qualifier in New Caledonia. The defection of Australia to the Asian qualifying section for the World Cup means that New Zealand are by far the strongest side in Oceania, but there is then a huge gulf in quality when they step up a level.

When New Zealand contested the 2009 Confederations Cup, they failed to score a single goal, and it's hard to see where goals will come from in Russia too. Conversely, Mexico have plenty of firepower. Although he had a wretched season for Bayer Leverkusen, Chicharito scored against Portugal, his third goal in the last seven appearances for El Tri. Former Arsenal forward Carlos Vela is technically gifted, while Benfica's Raul Jimenez is also dangerous. With the likes of Hector Herrera and Andres Guardado, there is also plenty of quality in the Mexican midfield.
