NRL Preview
Parramatta Eels v New Zealand Warriors

Friday, June 2, 7:50pm (AEST), ANZ Stadium, Sydney

The Eels looked good against an ordinary Rabbitohs outfit last week and it will give Brad Arthur’s men plenty of confidence that they can get the job done without the likes of Corey Norman and Michael Jennings. Mitchell Moses showed a vast improvement in his second game in the Eels No.7 jersey. The Warriors did enough to beat an understrength Broncos side, but are still 0-6 away from Mt Smart this year.
History
The Warriors have won 4 of their last 5 against the Eels and won this year’s Round 6 clash 22-10 in Auckland. Warriors backrower Bodene Thompson crossed for a double in the 12-point victory. It’s worth noting that 3 of the 4 wins were at Mt Smart Stadium, with other victory at Parramatta Stadium. Six of the last eight games have topped 45 points.
Form
Parramatta are up to ninth on the ladder following their dominant 22-16 win over South Sydney on Friday night. The Eels put to bed a two-game losing streak with that win over the Rabbitohs. The Eels have not won a game this year without making them back-to-back. Parramatta have conceded 16 or fewer in 4 of their last 5. New Zealand beat an undermanned Brisbane team 28-10 on Saturday but were far from convincing. The Warriors have won just 2 of their last 6 and have won consecutive games just once this year and are 0-6 away from Mt Smart this year. New Zealand are up to 11th with a 5-7 record.
Key Matchup
Mitchell Moses v Shaun Johnson. Moses was arguably the Eels best in the win over the Rabbitohs and will continue to improve as he finds his feet in the Eels’ system. He provided good direction in the absence of Corey Norman and will form a handy halves partnership once Norman returns from a keen injury. Johnson picked up three Dally M points for his man of the match performance in the win over the Broncos last week. He scored a try and set up two others in one of his best efforts of the season. The Warriors usually fire during the Origin period and Johnson will need another MOM performance if the Warriors are to cause an unlikely upset.
Stats That Matter

  • Parramatta are 6-6 ATS with an 8-4 under record while New Zealand are 4-8 ATS with a 7-5 under record.
  • The Warriors have won 4 of their last 5 against the Eels.
  • Six of the last eight games have topped 45 points.
  • Parramatta have covered 9 of their last 12 at ANZ.
  • The Eels have gone under in 14 of 21 games at ANZ since 2013.
  • Parramatta have covered 6 of their last 7 when favoured by 3.5 or fewer.
  • Parramatta have covered 8 of their last 12 off a win.
  • The Warriors are 25-36 ATS away from Mt Smart since 2013 including just 5 of their last 15.
  • They are 4-9 ATS away from Mt Smart off a double digit win.
Final Thoughts
The Wolf isn’t reading too much into the Warriors win over the Broncos last week, considering the Broncos were missing six of their stars. The Eels played a physical brand of football against the Rabbitohs and will look to adopt similar tactics against the big Warriors pack. The stats don’t paint a pretty picture for the Warriors away from Mt Smart and they can’t be trusted until they string a few wins together.
