Hyeon Chung played the match of his life to beat Novak Djokovic but how will he fare as a heavy favourite…

Day 11 – Men’s Semi Final Preview

Marin Cilic v Kyle EdmundNot the semi final we expected with both men causing huge upsets in their respective quarter final matches. Kyle Edmund overpowered Dimitrov and it allowed him to consistently create break point opportunities. His inside-out forehand was a real feature and he was able to push Dimitrov wide. Repeating that against the two handed backhand of Cilic will not reap the same rewards. The signs looked ominous early on for Cilic when Rafa went up by a set and a break but he dug deep – REALLY DEEP. He won 4 straight games to claim the second set and stepped up the aggression from that point on. Nadal was clearly hampered by an injury but let’s take nothing away from the performance of Cilic as he was clearly on top before it occurred.
Both men will see this as a huge opportunity! For Edmund it is a chance to make his maiden slam final at just 23 while Cilic will look to capitalise on what is realistically an advantageous draw. The pair have met on one other occasion – late last year in Shanghai. Cilic won in straight sets with Edmund unable to make any inroads on the Cilic serve. He won just 22% of return points and generated no breaks. The most impressive number for Cilic was 74% of 2nd serve points won. He made full use of the fast conditions on that occasion and after thundering down 20 aces against Rafa he is serving with great rhythm. We will see at least one tiebreaker with breaks of serve few and far between. It makes the Overs the best play with the experience of Cilic to play it’s part in a 4 set win.

Day 11 – Women’s Semi Finals Preview

Elise Mertens v Caroline Wozniacki
Mertens more than held her own against Svitolina… she completely frustrated the Ukranian in what was a flawless performance. The Wolf said that their only prior meeting (on clay) was irrelevant and the same can be said for her clash with Wozniacki. Their only encounter came on the clay in Bastad less than 12 months ago and it took Wozniacki three sets to get it done. Mertens was her own worst enemy with 9 double faults but she was able to generate four breaks of serve. There is a reason why Mertens is yet to drop a set – she is playing at a extremely high level. She is a genuine chance as the outsider.
Best Bet: To Win A Set – Mertens ($1.67)
Value Bet: Mertens WIN ($2.90)
