We’re into the second week and as the stakes rise, so will the level of tennis. Federer has been allocated a day session match for the first time of the tournament with Djokovic and young gun Hyeon Chung facing off in the prime time slot. Can the Djokovic comeback continue or will a new star be born…
Day 8 – Men’s 4th Round Feature Match Previews
Fabio Fognini v Tomas BerdychIf Berdych can replicate the tennis he played against Del Potro he is a genuine chance of going all the way. He served superbly, thundering down 20 aces, but The Wolf says it was his backhand up the line which was the difference maker. Del Potro likes to sit in his backhand corner – hitting either slice backhands or inside-out forehands but Berdych prevented him from doing so by attacking with his backhand down the line. It is a tactic that he should also employ against Fognini who is notorious for camping on the ad side of the court. The pair have met on 4 occasions with two wins each but Berdych came out victorious in their one and only meeting on a hard court. The way Berdych is hitting the ball – Fognini stands very little chance whatsoever.

Marton Fucsovics v Roger Federer
This will be Federer’s first day game of the tournament but it will make little difference with almost perfect conditions forecast. Winds will creep up to 30km/h but that will not phase Roger who can adapt to any conditions. Fucsovics will be pinching himself prior to walking out on Rod Laver Arena. He has been plying his trade on the Challenger Tour and now finds himself playing for a spot in the quarter finals of the Australian Open. The occasion will most definitely get to him and as we have seen in the past – inexperienced players look completely lost when they face Federer for the first time. The reason why is because he has every shot in the book and he uses them. His variety of spins, slices and style of play prevent his opponents from finding any rhythm. The Wolf will be shocked if Fucsovics is able to win a set and says Federer will look to put the pedal down nice and early.

The Wolf has been more than happy to fade Dominic Thiem throughout the tournament but he has been wearing down some average opponents and gets another one here. Credit to Sandgren for his performances to date but he does not have the quality to match it with the Austrian. Novak Djokovic v Hyeon ChungWe were all over Chung in his win over Zverev. He defended like the man he will be facing this evening before turning defence into attack with his forehand. It is that forehand which will determine the outcome of this match. Djokovic is arguably the best defender in the history of tennis and few men have the ability to hit through him. Chung will have to attack the Djokovic serve – especially the second ball. Ramos-Vinolas failed to do so and it allowed the former world number 1 to simply roll his 2nd serve in. Chung cannot afford to do the same and should look to run around and hit heavy forehands at every opportunity. The Korean has been in fantastic form dating back to the end of 2017. He won the Next Gen Finals and has registered impressive wins over a host of in form players. They met here two years ago with Djokovic making like work of a then 19 year old Chung. We will not be seeing a repeat and The Wolf says the night conditions will suit the Chung game. We could be going the distance.

If Osaka is given the same opportunities as the American she will capitalise. Osaka has been on the front foot from the opening point of the tournament. She has taken the racquet out of her opponents hands by playing a relentless brand of aggressive tennis. There is only so much chasing that Halep will be able to do before she feels the physical effects of her previous match.
