We’re into the quarter finals at the first major of the year and we could see a repeat of last year’s semi final if Nadal and Dimitrov can win their respective matches. Cilic and Edmund have been giving the task of preventing that from happening.

Day 9 – Men’s Quarter Finals Preview

Rafael Nadal v Marin CilicIt’s the quarter final that The Wolf predicted and Cilic will need to be at the top of his game if he is to spring an upset. Nadal is 5-1 in the H2H and has dropped just a single set in their last 5 meetings. Cilic has been winning a massive % of points behind both his 1st and 2nd serves in this tournament but he has not been able to achieve that in the past against Nadal. The Croat has won a little over 60% of points behind his 1st serve across the last 5 meetings and that makes him vulnerable to say the least. Nadal has won over 40% of return points for the tournament and The Wolf says he will achieve that number again unless Cilic plays heavy down the lines and closes in on the net. Can he do it with any sort of conviction… Wolfy says NO! He had troubles putting Harrison and Carreno-Busta with 4 of his last 7 sets being decided by a breaker. With conditions forecast in the low 20’s, Cilic will not get enough out of the court to hit through Rafa.
Best Bet: Nadal -5.5 ($1.80)
Value Bet: 2nd Set Score After 2 Games Nadal 2-0 ($3.90)
Grigor Dimitrov v Kyle Edmund
Dimitrov crushed the hearts of Australia with a gutsy win over Kyrgios and it was an unexpected reversal on his form leading into the match. He served extremely well in the clutch and winning three consecutive breakers against Kyrgios is some feat. A semi finalist a year ago he is in for another genuine battle – this time against Edmund. The Brit is consistent off both wings and has a big game. He will look to utilise the serve/forehand combo as often as possible and has troubled Dimitrov in the past. They have met twice over the course of the last 6 months with both contests going the distance. Dimitrov has managed to get the win on both occasions but if Edmund can take his chances he is more than capable of winning this match. They will be going 4 or 5 sets and we should see multiple breakers. The Overs is the best bet in this one.
Best Bet: Over 37.5 games ($1.85)
Value Bet: 1st Set Correct Score 7-6 ($3.20)

Day 9 – Women’s Quarter Finals Preview

Elise Mertens v Elina Svitolina
Two early season title winners lock horns with Mertens getting very little respect in the betting market. She is yet to drop a set and is on a 9 match win streak after winning Hobart. She may have lost her only meeting with Svitolina but that came on a clay court so we will be paying very little attention to that match. Mertens has broken serve at least 5 times in each of her matches at the 2018 Australian Open with a total of 22 breaks through 4 matches. Svitolina has wins over Pliskova and Suarez Navarro already this season (both in thew quarters here) and there is no doubting her current form but The Wolf cannot see this one ending quickly. Mertens to hold her own in a tense match.
Best Bet: Over 20.5 games ($1.85)
Carla Suarez Navarro v Caroline Wozniacki
Does Suarez Navarro have anything left in the tank… She has needed three sets to get through each of her last three matches coming from a set down against more favoured opponents in each of her last two. Wozniacki on the other hand has breezed through her 3rd and 4th round matches, keeping things very tidy as is almost always the case. Wozniacki leads the H2H 5-2 but the Spaniard was the victor in their one and only clash last year. The former world number 1 is a defensive player which means Navarro will be given every opportunity to play her shots. If she can find a way to move forward behind her shots she will give herself a much better chance at causing an upset. We will be going the distance.
Best Bet: To Win A Set – Suarez Navarro ($2.20)
