Roger Federer v Hyeon Chung

The pair could not possibly be any different. One is a 19 time Grand Slam champion who has done it all before while the other is an enigmatic 21 year old who is making his first semi final appearance at a major. The differences don’t end there. From age and experience to rank and playing style they are polar opposites. As we have seen in his fairy tale run, Chung relies heavily on his athleticism to wear down his opponents. He will trade blows from the baseline before looking to attack with his forehand. In the past, nobody has been able to make this a winning formula against Federer, as the Swiss maestro has consistently been able to take the game away from his opponents. Federer will serve well as he has all tournament and Chung will be lucky to claim 30% of return points. That leaves him vulnerable – very vulnerable. The Wolf cannot see Chung getting enough out of his 1st serve and is unlikely to win more than 70% of those points. This is also Chung’s first meeting against Federer and adjusting will be a problem. Federer’s variety and all court game will be a whole new proposition for the Korean. The Wolf cannot see him making any inroads on serve or in baseline exchanges with Federer to run away with this one. If Chung concedes a break early – you can start to draw the curtains closed on his campaign.
