Prior to the start of the tournament The Wolf says to keep an eye out for a kid named Shapovalov but he did not expect what we witnessed in the 3rd round. The local teenager came from a set down to beat Nadal and in doing so denting the Spaniard’s quest to reclaim the number 1 ranking. Federer was also below his best but manahed to maintain his perfect record against David Ferrer while Kyrgios went down in straight sets to the high flying Alexander Zverev. The results mean that Federer and Zverev are the only top 10 seeds remaining with Shapovalov, Mannarino, Schwartzman, Anderson and Haase all making the quarters as unseeded players. Who will continue their dream run…
Feature Previews
Robin Haase v Diego Schwartzman
It’s not often we see a player win a match after being bageled in the opening set but Schrwartzman did exactly that. He has now won three epic 3 setters this week but The Wolf is adamant that he will not be making it four. Haase is 4-0 lifetime against the Argentine including a dominant 6-1 6-3 earlier this year. Going this deep into a tournament is foreign territory for Schwartzman and it will be the telling factor down the stretch.
Best Bet: Haase -1.5 ($1.80)
Roberto Bautista-Agut v Roger Federer
Federer is riding a 14 match win streak but he was less than convincing against Ferrer. He made an uncharacteristic number of unforced errors early on before finding his feet to close it out. Like Ferrer, he also has a perfect record against Bautista-Agut. Not only is Federer 6-0 he has won all 12 sets contested by the pair. Bautista kept it very close in Miami earlier this year but after a epic battle with Monfils Wolfy cannot see him at his best for this one. Even his best is not good enough against Roger.
Best: Under 20.5 games ($1.85)
Alexander Zverev v Kevin Anderson
The ease of their respective 3rd round matches would have come as a great surprise. Anderson broke the Querrey serve on 4 occasions while Zverev was just as efficient generating 3 breaks in his match with Kyrgios. In the three meetings between them it Zverev who has dominated. He holds a 3-0 H2H advantage over Anderson which includes two wins this year. The most recent meetings came last week in the final of Washington – a match where Zverev was seemingly unstoppable. The slightly slower court conditions here will also favour Zverev.
Best Bet: Sets Zverev 2-0 ($2.05)
