Cercle Brugge v OH Leuven
Tuesday October 03, 19:30
Thanks heavens for consolation goals. Helsingborg were 2-0 down at Gefle in the 90th minute, spiralling towards defeat. Edwin Gyimah's last-gasp goal did nothing for his team, but it gave us a winner last night. Edwin, you're a hero, and we salute you.
I'm a big fan of random coaching appointments that come totally out of left field, and we're focusing on one today. Nigel Pearson kept Leicester City in the Premier League against the odds, and arguably laid the groundwork for Claudio Ranieri's extraordinary title-winning season. He can be an awkward, combustible character (he bizarrely accused a journalist of being an ostrich - as it turns out, he wasn't an ostrich), but he can be a very effective football coach.
Pearson is once again working with the Srivaddhanaprabha family, who own Leicester City. They have hired him to replace Dennis van Wijk, who made a mixed start to the campaign. Pearson drew his first game 1-1 with Beerschot-Wilrijk, and then beat SV Roeselare 2-0.
Leuven are now third in the table, and they visit a Cercle Brugge side that are a place and two points better off. That said, tonight's hosts have lost two of their last three games in league and cup, and feels like they shouldn't be a shade over evens to win this against a side that's so close to them in the standings.
