Perhaps the greatest rivalry in the open era once again meet for a record 53rd occasion. Coming in with injury concerns, Nadal has potentially played his best Australian Open tournament in his career. The way he dismantled Next Gen players De Minaur, Tiafoe and Tsitsipas was almost effortless, yet mesmerising. Across the fortnight he’s been the best player of the tournament, but Novak Djokovic has timed his run perfectly. It was a slow start for the world number 1. He was solid without being great against both Shapovalov and Medvedev in the third and fourth rounds. He didn’t need to do much against Nishikori who retired hurt, but that Semi Final against Pouille was close to the perfect match. 6-0 6-2 6-2, first serve percentage at 72%, 24 winners and 5 unforced errors – 5! He’s primed himself for this match across the fortnight, and looks for a record seventh Australian Open title. Djokovic is 6-0 in Australian Open Final’s, including what some claim as the best Final in Australian Open history in 2012 when he beat Nadal in five sets and over five hours. These two are so close at the moment, that I’m predicting another five setter in this one. With that in mind, I’m going with Djokovic to win a record 7th title due to his elite endurance, and the constant question marks surrounding Nadal’s body in high intensity matches.
Djokovic 4-6 7-6 6-3 5-7 6-2
