Sportfreunde Lotte v Borussia Dortmund

A winning start to the week for us last night, as Pacos Ferreira held on for a 1-1 draw at Nacional. But I then lost to my wife at Trivial Pursuit, so it wasn't an unblemished evening.

We switch our attention to Germany, as third-tier side Sportfreunde Lotte look to cause another extraordinary upset against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. The game will be played in Osnabruck instead of Lotte, after the original game was called off due to snow in Lotte. I have had two Kolsch-fuelled debates in German bars with people about this (I'm rock and roll, folks), and I still think the game should be staged in Lotte, regardless of their dodgy pitch.

The removal of home advantage has basically killed off any hopes of an upset, even though Lotte have dumped out Bundesliga sides Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen, as well as second-level side 1860 Munich. In what is effectively a neutral venue, I'm expecting Borussia Dortmund to stroll to victory, especially as they have a point to prove.

BVB fell even further behind leaders Bayern Munich at the weekend, as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Hertha Berlin. It was a bad end to what had been an excellent week, as Dortmund had thrashed Leverkusen 6-2 and Benfica 4-0.

Given that the weekend's defeat sparked widespread criticism of Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel, I wouldn't be surprised to see him select something close to his strongest side. As a result of that, I'm predicting plenty of goals. Given that Lotte scored twice against both Werder and Bayer, they might contribute to the fun too.
