Bayern Munich v Schalke

As it turned out, Frankfurt's fury wasn't as fierce as we'd foreseen. When they fell a goal short by only beating Arminia Bielefeld 1-0 last night, I threw another F-word in there for good measure.

We move on, but not very far. Bayern Munich are also in DFB Pokal action this week, and they are up against Schalke.

Bayern ruthlessly demolished Hamburg 8-0 at the weekend, and although that's a result worthy of high praise, it's not unusual. Hapless HSV have now leaked 44 goals in their last seven visits to the Allianz Arena, so it's tough to judge Bayern's form based on that game. If I was Hamburg, I'd just accept a 5-0 defeat every year to save on travel costs and help the goal difference.

I still think Bayern aren't quite where they should be under Carlo Ancelotti, and they have been given a few problems this season by tonight's opponents Schalke. In Gelsenkirchen, only a late charge saw Bayern finally break the Royal Blues down in a 2-0 win. A few weeks ago, Bayern were held 1-1 at home by Markus Weinzierl's men, and S04 hit the bar through Guido Burgstaller with the score tied.

Although they are still struggling in the league, Schalke have saved some of their best performances this season for the cup competitions, especially away from home. They went to Ligue 1 title challengers Nice and totally controlled the match in a 1-0 win, and they have also registered impressive wins at Krasnodar and PAOK.

An added twist to tonight's tale sees on-loan Bayern defender Holger Badstuber come up against his parent club. Badstuber is trying to prove his worth after a catalogue of injury problems, and he will be needed by Schalke, now that Brazilian veteran Naldo has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an adductor muscle injury.

Bayern have played 13 home games against German opposition in league and cup, and they have only won five of them by more than two goals. I think they will find Schalke a lot harder to break down than Hamburg, so I think if we give the visitors a two-goal start, we have a good chance of making a profit.
