NRL Preview
Gold Coast Titans v Newcastle Knights

Saturday, April 29, 3pm (AEST), Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast

The Titans can’t take a trick with injuries, but have to be the most resilient side in the competition, demonstrated by their impressive 16-12 win over the Sharks. The return of Jarryd Hayne sparked the Titans into action and they’ll enjoy playing the Knights this week. The Knights find themselves at the bottom of the table and look set for another tough year. The Knights pack is down to bare bones, with reports Mitch Barnett is set to join Jamie Buhrer on the sidelines through injury. The Sione Mata’utia experiment in the halves looks doomed and it would be hard to see Nathan Brown not recall the experienced Trent Hodkinson.
History
Newcastle have won 10 of the 17 matches against the Titans all-time including 3 of the last 4 on the Gold Coast. The Knights won this year’s Round 2 clash in Newcastle 34-26, with both Nathan Ross and Konrad Hurrell crossing for doubles.
Form
Gold Coast broke through for a much-deserved win against defending premiers Cronulla but still have just two wins to show for the season. The Titans have conceded fewer than 24 points just twice this season and won both matches. In three of their four home games this year they have conceded 32 points. Newcastle have just a single win for the 2017 season and just two wins since the start of last year. They have dropped six in a row and have averaged just 11ppg over that run. The Knights have conceded at least 19 points in every match.
Key Matchup
Jarryd Hayne v Brendan Elliot. Hayne made a welcome return to the Titans side from an ankle injury and led the Titans to victory over the Sharks. He’ll only get better with a run under his belt and is set for a huge game against the Knights. Elliot has been steady at the back for the Knights and scored a try in the loss to the Cowboys. Nathan Brown will be asking more of Elliot to help out the inexperienced halves, while Hodkinson is out of the 17. He has speed to burn and needs to get more involved to link with the Knights outside men.
Stats That Matter
Gold Coast are 4-4 ATS with a 6-2 over record while Newcastle are 3-5 ATS with a 6-2 under number. Newcastle have won 10 of the 17 matches against the Titans all-time including 3 of the last 4 on the Gold Coast. Seven of the last nine matches have failed to break 42 points. The Knights ended their long losing streak in Round 2 with a win against the Titans. Gold Coast have covered just 1 of their last 6 home stands but they are 3-0 ATS since 2015 when favoured at home by more than a converted try. Gold Coast are 3-6 ATS as a home favourite off a win. The Knights have covered just 12 of their last 29 interstate games while they have covered just 2 of their last 6 getting double digits.
Final Thoughts
The Titans will have a point to prove after the Round 2 loss to the Knights and should have a field day at Robina. The likes of Hayne and Taylor will have too much skill and class for a makeshift Knights side which is looking very inexperienced in the forwards minus Buhrer and Barnett. Titans to win and win well.
