Adelaide United continued their hot form with an impressive win at home against Melbourne Victory last weekend. Young gun Riley McGree continued his excellent start to the season with a brace, helping the Reds ease past Victory by three goals to one. That win was Adelaide’s fourth on the spin in the A-League and fifth in a row in all competitions, which has seem them rise to third spot on the table.
Meanwhile, Wellington Phoenix had a successful Round 7 as well, claiming their first win of the season when they hosted Brisbane Roar. Phoenix looked a lot better in control of possession last time out and will be hoping the win will kickstart their season and see them rise from the bottom of the table. Despite a boost in confidence for Phoenix, the Wolf can’t see them getting anywhere near Adelaide in this one. The Reds are the form team of the competition and on their home deck, should be far too strong for Phoenix.
The Reds are flying right now, having won four in a row including their 3-1 triumph over Melbourne Victory on Saturday night.
Having already won the FFA Cup under Gertjan Verbeek, Adelaide fans are beginning to dream of Hyundai A-League glory, especially with the likes of Riley McGree, James Troisi and Louis D’Arrigo in such devastating form.
But the Phoenix will be looking to put a halt to the Reds’ charge when they come to town rejuvenated from their first win of the campaign.
Ufuk Talay’s side disposed of Brisbane Roar 2-1 on the weekend to give his young squad a much-needed boost.
Phoenix certainly have the firepower and talent to pull off an upset on the road, but it will take something special to knock over this classy Adelaide outfit.
Note :
- Adelaide United are undefeated in their last 11 Hyundai A-League matches against Wellington Phoenix (W7, D4). They haven’t lost to the New Zealand outfit since November 2015.
- The Reds have won their last four Hyundai A-League matches on the bounce, the last time they enjoyed a longer winning run was a five-match span from March to May in 2016.
- The Phoenix have the best tackle success rate (63/99 – 64%) of any team this Hyundai A-League season, nine percentage points more than Adelaide United (54/99 – 55%).
