Monaco failed to make it back-to-back wins at the start of the Ligue 1 season as Lille held them to a goalless draw at the Stade Louis II.
Hosts Monaco, who beat Nice 2-1 last time, had plenty of chances in the first half but Lille goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama produced the goods to deny them.
Lille were a different team in the second half and could easily have scored a few themselves but for Danijel Subasic's efforts in the Monaco goal.
The game's bizarre element came deep in the second half when Mounir Obbadi and his Lille team-mate Sofiane Boufal seemed to simultaneously challenge Monaco's Fabinho.
Referee Benoit Millot initially charged the previously booked Obbadi with the incident and produced a red card, only to then change his mind and award Boufal a yellow instead.
Monaco should have made goals the talking point well before that, as Bernardo Silva had a header wide just 40 seconds in, while Nabil Dirar showed excellent control for a long ball but Enyeama saved the shot with his legs.
The Lille keeper then superbly saved from a Joao Moutinho free-kick as well, but after the break, Lille produced two quick chances as Baptiste Guillaume got on the end of some good passing, but was denied on both occasions by Subasic.
Boufal had provided the expert assists in both cases, but after Moutinho was forced off with an injury, the Moroccan would be involved in the incident that nearly saw Obbadi wrongly sent off.
Monaco had one late chance to speak of when Ricardo Carvalho's header from a free-kick was brilliantly saved by Enyeama, before Lille too squandered an opportunity when substitute Soualiho Meite missed a flick shot from point-blank range in stoppage time.
