The Azzurri didn't make us blue last night, as Italy's 3-0 win over injury-hit Uruguay maintained our perfect start to the week. Bellissimo.
We're changing continents this time, as we take in a friendly between Peru and Paraguay.
Peru will always be a favourite of some sentimental football fans, simply because they have that awesome kit.
However, despite the red diagonal slash on the white background winning
hearts and minds, it hasn't won many trophies for Los Incas. They
haven't won the Copa America since 1975, and haven't reached the World
Cup finals since 1982. The country has contributed some great players,
such as legendary forward Teofilo Cubillas, defender Hector Chumpitaz (they called him El Capitan de America) and Bundesliga goal machine Claudio Pizarro.
Peru aren't totally out of the race for next year's World Cup in
Russia, as they are five points adrift of the top five with four games
left. Tonight's opponents Paraguay are locked together with the
Peruvians on 18 points, as they look to reach their first World Cup
since 2010. Indeed, the failure to make Brazil 2014 was their first such disappointment since they missed out on USA '94.
At present, Paraguay are on a wretched run of form.
They have lost eight of their last 11 games including friendlies and the
Copa America, but bizarrely they beat Argentina, Chile and Ecuador in
the same period. Their biggest issue is a leaky defence - they have conceded 19 goals in their last eight outings, including a 4-1 defeat to Peru in a qualifier last November.
Given Paraguay's brittle defence and the fact these teams shared five
goals relatively recently, I fancy goals tonight. Peru have seen seven
of their last eight games feature at least three goals, and that's true
of six of Paraguay's last nine matches.
