NRL Preview
Brisbane Broncos v South Sydney Rabbitohs

Friday, June 9, 7:50pm (AEST), Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

The Broncos were gallant in defeat against the Roosters last week, with five of their six Queensland representatives backing up after Origin 1. Anthony Milford missed the clash after he picked up a head knock in Origin 1, with Benji Marshall stepping into the No.6 jersey and turning back the clock. The Rabbitohs will be fresh after the bye in Round 13 and will want to have improved dramatically on what they dished up against the Eels in Round 12. Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds could miss the clash with a knee injury.
HistoryThe Broncos have lost only seven games against the Rabbitohs since 1990 and have won four straight, including a 25-24 win in Round 8 this year. Queensland winger Corey Oates crossed for a double in the one-point win.
FormBrisbane have suffered back-to-back losses to New Zealand and the Sydney Roosters after winning six straight prior to the Origin period. The Broncos were hammered without their Origin stars against the Warriors but almost pulled off an upset away to the Roosters. They are now down to fifth. Brisbane have conceded at least 18 in five of their last seven. South Sydney have fallen to 13th on the ladder with a 4-8 record, losing seven of nine before their bye with their only wins coming against an understrength Penrith and the Wests Tigers. Souths have been held to single digits in five of their last nine.
Key Matchup
Darius Boyd v Cody Walker. Boyd has been one of the Broncos best performers throughout the season, but was completely outplayed in State of Origin 1 by NSW fullback James Tedesco. The Wolf is expecting a strong performance from Boyd here, especially with talk that Billy Slater will take the No.1 QLD jersey off him for Origin 2. Walker’s form has fallen away over his past two games for the Rabbitohs which has also coincided with talk that he wants out of Redfern. Rabbitohs fans will be hoping that the week off has switched Walker on, otherwise the Rabbitohs are a one-man band named Sam Burgess.
Stats That Matter

  • Brisbane are 7-6 ATS with an 8-5 over record while South Sydney are 6-6 ATS with a 7-5 under record.
  • The Broncos have lost only seven games against the Rabbitohs since 1990 and have won four straight, including a 25-24 win in Round 8 this year.
  • The three wins prior were all by margins of 20-plus.
  • The last nine games have all topped 38 points.
  • The Broncos are 13-5 ATS as a double digit favourite at Suncorp since 2014.
Final ThoughtsThe Wolf can’t get the Rabbitohs inept performance against the Eels out of his mind and can’t go anywhere near them based on that effort. The Broncos are near full-strength with the return of Anthony Milford and have a dominant record over the Rabbitohs. The Bunnies will put in for the first 20 minutes, before the Broncos put them to the sword.
