NRL Preview
Manly Sea Eagles v Newcastle Knights

Friday, June 9, 6pm (AEST), Lottoland, Sydney

The Sea Eagles have won four of their past five matches and will fancy their chances of racking up a cricket score against the cellar-dwelling Knights, who were smashed 40-12 by the Melbourne Storm last week. Manly’s Round 13 golden point win over the Raiders came at a cost, with in-form winger Jorge Taufua ruled out for the season with an ACL injury. Tom Trbojevic has been named on an extended bench but would appear an outside chance to take his spot in the starting 17.
History
The Sea Eagles have won six straight against Newcastle (five by margins of 16-plus) and 10 of the last 12. Manly have  also won five straight against the Knights at Brookvale with Newcastle’s last win at the ground back in 2006. The Sea Eagles won last year’s Round 21 clash at Brookvale Oval by 36-16.
Form
Manly are up to sixth on the ladder with a 7-5 record following their golden point win over Canberra. The Sea Eagles have now won their last two and four of their last five. Manly have scored 20-plus in five of their last six. They are 2-4 at Brookvale this year. Newcastle are last on the ladder with a 2-4 record and a -137 differential. They have conceded at least 19 points in every game this year and at least 30 in their last two. Newcastle have scored over 20 points just once since Round 2.
Key Matchup
Martin Taupau v Daniel Saifiti. Taupau has been simply unstoppable this season and will be licking his lips in anticipation about the upcoming clash against the Knights. His stats were outstanding in the win over the Raiders, making 227 metres from 22 runs, 5 offloads and scored 1 try. Saifiti has been one of the Knights’ shining lights in a struggling side. He’s been very consistent in both attack and defence, and looks a great talent at only 21 years of age.
Stats That Matter

  • Manly are 8-4 ATS with a 6-6 total number while Newcastle are 5-7 ATS also with a 6-6 total record.
  • Manly have won six straight against Newcastle (five by margins of 16-plus) and 10 of the last 12.
  • The Sea Eagles have won five straight against the Knights at Brookvale with Newcastle’s last win at the ground back in 2006.
  • Manly have covered three of their last four at Brookvale and are 6-4 ATS as a favourite of more than 6.5 at the ground since 2014.
  • The Sea Eagles have covered 8 of their last 12 at night while the Knights are an awful 11-21 ATS in night games since 2014 with seven straight non-covers.
  • Newcastle are 2-11 ATS as a double digit favourite at night since 2015.
Final Thoughts
The Wolf is not falling into the Knights again after taking them with the big start against the Storm. All the statistics point to a comfortable Sea Eagles victory here and the Knights spirit and resolve was completely shattered in Melbourne last week.
