West Ham United have secured another season-long loan of Arsenal right back Carl Jenkinson, following the England Under-21 defender’s successful stint at Upton Park last campaign.
The Gunners full back made 32 Premier League outings for West Ham last term, with his reliable and consistent performances making him one of former Hammers coach Sam Allardyce’s most impressive signings.
Now Jenkinson, still just 23, is to continue his development under new boss Slaven Bilic, once a defender at Upton Park during his own playing days, so it will be interesting to see how the Croatian coach guides the young Gunner.
Having toiled down the Young Lions’ right rearguard flank at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, which ended in heartbreak for England after a group stage exit, Jenkinson has certainly had a busy summer.
Despite his happy Hammers return, it still seems as though Jenkinson’s future could lie in north London rather than east, however, as Arsenal are reportedly ready to extend the former Charlton Athletic star’s contract until 2020.
The Gunners defender’s current deal expires in 2018 but it appears Arsene Wenger is not ready to risk Jenkinson being plucked from his ranks for a bargain price, or until he has reached his full potential.
Currently at the Emirates, Jenkinson has Frenchman Mathieu Debuchy plus impressive young talents Hector Bellerin and Calum Chambers in his path, all challenging for the right back berth, but has found plenty of game time at Upton Park.
The England cap has been a hit for the Hammers, with co-owner David Gold previously stating: “We are very working hard to try and get Carl back here. We recognise this is an important season for us, being in Europe, and we will go the extra mile to ensure we have got the strongest possible squad we can muster.”
The experience of regular European football can only boost Jenkinson’s chances of breaking back into the senior Three Lions fold, with another temporary deal the best fit for both capital clubs and the player.
