Greater Western Sydney have fingers crossed that star midfielder Dylan Shiel will be able to play again this season.
Shiel needs knee surgery that could sideline him for up to 12 weeks, which would rule him out of the rest of the campaign.
A best-case scenario would see the 22-year-old back in action in half that time.
Shiel twisted his knee in the second quarter of the 35-point win over St Kilda at Spotless Stadium on Sunday.
He suffered a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee, and will have an exploratory arthroscope later this week to find out the extent of his injury.
GWS, who are 3.25 to finish in the top eight, will then decide on the best surgical approach and be able to predict how soon he will be back in action.
Shiel had been a leading contender for the club's best and fairest award, while his consistent form had also been rewarded with a contract extension until the end of 2017.
The Giants, who are bidding to make the finals for the first time, already have key defenders Joel Patfull, Tim Mohr and Phil Davis as well as ruckman Shane Mumford on the sidelines.
Ahead of their clash with struggling Gold Coast on Saturday, where the Giants are 1.91, they have had the boost of seeing Stephen Coniglio sign a new two-year deal.
The onballer had attracted significant interest from West Coast and two Victorian clubs but opted to stay with the Giants, who recruited him with pick No. 2 at the 2011 AFL Draft.
It leaves Adam Treloar as the last of their targets for re-signing, with five players who would have been out of contract at the end of this year, now secured long-term.
Treloar has been targeted by a host of clubs who are understood to be ready to offer him a deal of up to eight years.
