REAL MADRID have outwitted Manchester United in the transfer saga surrounding David De Gea and Sergio Ramos.
United have told Real to accept a final bid of £35m for Ramos - or forget about signing De Gea in return.
United bosses have slapped in a take-it-or-leave-it offer for Ramos in the hope of luring the World Cup winner to Old Trafford.
Starsport understands if Real agree to the fee then United will accept a reduced bid of around £25m for De Gea from the Spanish giants.
But despite Real president Florentino Perez being desperate to take De Gea to the Bernabeu, it appears he has come up with a plan to keep Ramos and land De Gea on the cheap in 12 months time.
Reports in Spain claim De Gea and Real have reached an agreement that would see the 10-time European champions pay him a £3.5m signing on fee next summer.
In return, De Gea would not be able to negotiate a new, long term contract with United and would join Real on a free transfer.
De Gea, who is currently on United's pre-season tour of America, will be free to hold official talks with other clubs in January but has set his heart on joining Real.
Perez has guaranteed De Gea the lump tax-free lump sum and is prepared to wait until the start of next season to get the goalkeeper.
Now United chief executive Ed Woodward fears Perez will hold out for £45m for Ramos and refuse to sell him unless the Premier League giants meet the asking price.
Woodward is not afraid to splash the cash, but knows £45m is too much for a defender who is 29 and will have no sell-on value once he comes to the end of his Old Trafford contract.
United boss Louis van Gaal is desperate to land Ramos and make him his fourth summer signing.
The Dutchman has already spent £80m on Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian as he looks to turn United into champions again.
But Van Gaal is now facing up to the prospect of missing out on Ramos and then losing De Gea for nothing next summer.
