Gold Coast Suns midfielder David Swallow's comeback has ended after just two games.
Swallow will miss the rest of the season, after aggravating his right posterior cruciate ligament in the defeat to Western Bulldogs in Cairns.
The 2014 club champion had only returned to action the previous week against North Melbourne following an eight-week lay-off.
It means the Suns now have three midfielders ruled out for the rest of the campaign, with Dion Prestia and Jaeger O'Meara already on the long-term injury list.
Gold Coast general manager of football operations Marcus Ashcroft said: "Our medical staff, David and specialists will discuss the options available to him in the coming days before determining the most appropriate way to rehabilitate the injury."
Swallow played a career-high 22 games last year for the Suns and became the first player other than Gary Ablett to win the club's best and fairest award.
Gold Coast had been boosted by his return, along with that of skipper Ablett, picking up a 55-point win against North Melbourne in round 14 to suggest they could start to pull away from the foot of the ladder.
But their dramatic fade-out in the 22-point loss to the Bulldogs taught them a harsh lesson, ruckman Tom Nicholls says.
Leading by 26 points at the final break, the Suns were on the receiving end of a 10-goal quarter onslaught by Luke Beveridge's side.
Nicholls said: "As for that last quarter you can learn so much. Just in terms of obviously fitness, that was one small part of it we think.
"In terms of our game plan as well, sticking to it. I think we were put in that situation we haven’t been in it too often."
Gold Coast, who are 1.91, come up against Greater Western Sydney side this weekend looking for revenge after their 66-point defeat to the Giants in round 4.
The Suns are 1.95 with a 1.5-points start.
