NRL Preview
Brisbane Broncos v Canberra Raiders

Friday, March 24, 8:05pm (AEDT), Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

The draw has done no favours to the Broncos, with clashes against the Sharks, Cowboys and Storm in their opening three matches. Meanwhile, the Raiders rediscovered the winning feeling after a comfortable 46-6 thumping of the Tigers. It sets up a huge clash at Suncorp Stadium, with two strong forward packs set to go toe-to-toe.
History
The Broncos have won three straight and 6 of their last 8 against the Raiders with the Broncos winning 8 of the last 9 at Suncorp Stadium. The Broncos won last year’s clash at Suncorp 26-18, with Broncos skipper Darius Boyd scoring a hat-trick.
Form
Brisbane have opened the season with a win and two losses but have been a little stiff with very close losses to co-premiership favourites North Queensland and Melbourne after downing the premiers. The Broncos led late in both before a golden point loss to the Cowboys and a tough last-minute beat to the Storm. Canberra’s two-game losing streak to open the season came to an end with a thumping of the Wests Tigers. The Raiders were excellent in the season opener in Townsville, going down in golden point, before an embarrassing home loss to Cronulla. Their attack clicked into gear against the Tigers posting 46 points.
Key Matchup
Darius Boyd v Jack Wighton. The Broncos captaincy appears to have brought out the best in Boyd and his experience cannot be underestimated, especially after the departure of Corey Parker. Boyd also crossed for a hat-trick in this corresponding clash last year. Wighton is one of the unsung heroes in the Raiders side and you can guarantee he is invaluable in Ricky Stuart’s eyes. He had a big second half against the Tigers and his kick returns will be crucial in getting the Raiders sets started.
Stats That Matter
Brisbane are 2-1 ATS with a 2-1 over number while Canberra are 2-1 ATS with a 2-1 over number. Brisbane have won three straight and 6 of their last 8 against the Raiders with the Broncos winning 8 of the last 9 at Suncorp. The Broncos are 27-14 ATS at Suncorp since 2014 but just 6-5 ATS when favoured by less than a converted try. They are 5-1 as a home favourite after scoring 12 points or fewer while they are 12-2 ATS with an 11-3 over record after conceding 14 points or fewer. Canberra are 26-12 ATS on the road since 2014 with nine straight covers.
Final Thoughts
The Broncos recent record over the Raiders and the strength of their opponents across the opening three rounds sways this one in their favour. They could easily be undefeated and the Raiders might not be prepared to roll up the sleeves after their easy win over the Tigers last week.
