NRL Preview
Penrith Panthers v Newcastle Knights

Friday, March 24, 6pm (AEDT), Pepper Stadium, Penrith

The Panthers were unlucky losers to the Roosters in Round 2, but have well and truly bounced back after their embarrassing 42-10 loss to the Dragons in Round 1. Meanwhile, the Knights were gallant in their 24-18 loss to the Rabbitohs last week, but will need to find another gear if they want to go with the Panthers at the foot of the mountains.
History
The Panthers have won 4 of the last 5 matches against the Knights, scoring 30+ points on 4 occasions. The Panthers won last year’s Round 23 clash at Newcastle by 42-6, with both Josh Mansour and Dallin Watene Zelezniak scoring doubles.
Form
Penrith have had an extraordinarily odd start to the season, getting hammered by the Dragons in Round 1 before a stunning turnaround in a 36-2 win over the Tigers on the road. Last round they went down 14-12 to the Roosters in a high quality affair where they were arguably a little unlucky. Penrith have conceded 14 points or fewer in their last two. Newcastle broke their long losing streak in Round 2 with a dramatic home win over Gold Coast before a gritty six-point loss at home to South Sydney. The Knights have conceded over 24 points in all three games but have tried hard defensively and have looked strong in attack with their Round 3 tally of 18 their lowest of the year.
Key Matchup
Nathan Cleary v Trent Hodkinson. Cleary is quickly becoming a leader of this team and is a future NSW No.7. He has great composure for a young player and one of the best kicking games in the competition. Despite his experience, Hodkinson lost his cool in the loss to the Rabbitohs and hurt his team by spending 10 minutes in the sin bin. He needs to keep a level head and be a calming influence on his inexperienced halves partner, Brock Lamb.
Stats That Matter
Penrith are 1-2 ATS with a 2-1 over number while Newcastle are 2-1 ATS with a 2-1 over record. Penrith have won 4 of the last 5 against Newcastle, posting 30-plus in all those wins. Home favourites of 12.5 or more in the first eight rounds of the year are 17-13 ATS. The Knights have covered just 3 of their last 12 when getting a start of 14 or more.
Final Thoughts
The Panthers should be too strong here against a Knight side, which has already showed more fight than all of their 2016 campaign. The Panthers could receive a boost if Bryce Cartwright is named and simply have too many attacking weapons across the park.
