NRL Preview
Wests Tigers v Melbourne Storm

Sunday, March 26, 4pm (AEDT), Leichhardt Oval, Sydney

It’s been a turbulent week in Tigertown, with the shock sacking of Jason Taylor just three rounds into the season. The Tigers are coming off a 46-6 thrashing at the hands of the Raiders and it will be up to the players to respond at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday. Meanwhile, the well-oiled machine that is the Storm continues to grind out wins and remains unbeaten after three rounds. Cameron Munster and Suliasi Vunivalu will both miss the clash due to injury.
History
The Storm have won 5 of the last 7 matches against the Tigers and won last year’s clash at Leichhardt Oval by 1 point. The Storm also won last year’s Round 16 clash in Melbourne 29-20, with Felise Kaufusi scoring two tries.
Form
The Wests Tigers opened the year with an impressive victory over South Sydney before being roundly hammered by both Penrith and Canberra, conceding 84 points over the last week while scoring just eight. Melbourne have enjoyed a perfect start to the season with wins over Canterbury, New Zealand and Brisbane, allowing an average of 9.3ppg. They haven’t put a side away yet but they haven’t needed to as their strong defence has got them some quality wins. The Storm are rightful title favourites.
Key Matchup
Aaron Woods v Jesse Bromwich. Woods is the captain and the leader of this forward pack. There’s no doubt that his comments about not signing until the Tigers settle on a coach beyond 2017 had an impact on the Tigers board to sack Jason Taylor. Woods should come out fired up on Sunday. Like Woods, Bromwich is the leader of the Storm pack and made an early comeback from a thumb injury in the win over the Broncos. He’s one of the best props in the game and will prove it once again here.
Stats That Matter
The Wests Tigers are 1-2 ATS with a 2-1 over record while Melbourne are 2-1 ATS with a 3-0 under record. The Storm have won 5 of the last 7 against the Tigers while 10 of the last 12 have tallied under 40 points. Home underdogs of 4 or more are 39-8 ATS in the first round rounds of the season since 2008. The Tigers have covered 7 of their last 11 as a home underdog at Leichhardt. The Storm have covered just 6 of their last 16 as a road favourite of 4 or more
Final Thoughts
There will be plenty of emotion at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday, but Storm coach Craig Bellamy is a master at keeping his side focussed on the job at hand. The Tigers will be spirited, but the Storm have the runs on the board. The Tigers will lift for this one, but you can’t bet against the clinical Storm straight up. However, the Tigers getting +6 looks a good play.
