NRL Preview
South Sydney Rabbitohs v Sydney Roosters

Thursday, March 23, 8.05pm (AEDT), ANZ Stadium, Sydney

The unbeaten Roosters travel to ANZ Stadium to take on a patched up Rabbitohs outfit. The Rabbitohs, who are already missing Greg Inglis for the year, will be without George Burgess, Hymel Hunt and Braidon Burns through suspension which is sure to test the depth at the club. Despite all of that, you can throw the form book out the window when these teams clash, with the rivalry one of the most famous in the competition. One player who will be keen for a big performance will be Roosters five-eighth Luke Keary, who faces his former for the first time after an unhappy exit from the Rabbitohs.
History
Both teams shared the spoils in 2016, with the Rabbitohs smashing the Roosters 42-10 in Round 1 last year, while the Roosters bounced back in Round 6, defeating the Rabbitohs 17-10. It’s worth noting that in last year’s Round 1 clash, the Roosters halves pairing was Jayden Nikorima and Jackson Hastings. The Rabbitohs hold a slight 6-4 advantage over the Roosters in the last 10 matches between the sides.
Form
South Sydney have made it two straight wins after an opening round embarrassment against the Tigers but have been patchy in both wins. Against Manly they conceded the first three tries before running over the top before an ill-disciplined display in Newcastle that required some favourable officiating and Cody Walker brilliance to get them home. The Sydney Roosters have opened the year 3-0 for the first time since 2004 after a gritty 14-12 win over Penrith. The Chooks have been outstanding with wins over the Titans, Bulldogs and Roosters, winning with both attack and defence.
Key Matchup
John Sutton v Luke Keary. Sutton moves into the No.6 jersey, with Cody Walker shifting back to fullback. The Wolf isn’t expecting Sutton to overplay his hand and will allow Adam Reynolds to control the ship. Sutton’s strength is his running game like his opposite number in Keary. Keary has made a strong start to his Roosters career and would have had this match circled on his calendar for some time. He leads the Dally M Medal leaderboard on 9 points, picking up the maximum 3 points in each Roosters match so far.
Stats That Matter
South Sydney are 2-1 ATS with a 2-1 over record while the Sydney Roosters are also 2-1 ATS with a 2-1 over number. Home underdogs of 4-plus in Rounds 1-4 since 2008 are 39-10 ATS. Home underdogs who scored 22 the start prior are 129-79 ATS since 2008. Souths are 3-6 ATS as a home underdog at the ground since 2014. The Roosters have covered just 1 of their last 5 as a road favourite.
Final Thoughts
The Roosters got out of jail last week against the Panthers and the ability to grind out a win would have pleased coach Trent Robinson. The Rabbitohs are down on troops as already mentioned, but should be more than competitive, with a halves pairing of Cody Walker and Adam Reynolds, while Sam Burgess is waiting to explode and this could be the match to bring out his best. The Roosters should win a tight one, making the Rabbitohs +8.5 a strong play here.
