NRL Preview
Cronulla Sharks v Wests Tigers

Saturday, June 17, 7:30pm (AEST), Southern Cross Group Stadium, Sydney

The Sharks enter this clash without five Origin stars (Fifita, Graham, Holmes, Maloney and Bird), while the Tigers are missing two of their best players (Tedesco and Woods). Luke Brooks is set to make his return from a hamstring injury and it couldn’t come at a better time after the Tigers were completely rudderless in last week’s hammering at the hands of the Roosters.
History
The Shark have won three straight and 5 of the last 7 against the Tigers, including a 22-16 win at Leichhardt in Round 9 this year. The last seven matches have all tallied 36 or more points.
Form
Cronulla are third on the ladder with a 9-4 record. They had a four-game win streak ended by Melbourne on home turf, going down 18-13. The 18 points conceded against Melbourne was the first time since Round 1 the Sharks had conceded more than 16 for the best defensive team in the NRL. Cronulla have played in six straight games decided by a score or less. The Wests Tigers are in total free-fall, down to 15th on the ladder with a 3-10 record and the worst differential in the NRL. The Tigers have dropped five straight and enter this off a 40-18 loss to the Sydney Roosters. The Tigers have conceded at least 22 in 9 of 13 matches this season.
Key Matchup
Paul Gallen v Elijah Taylor. Gallen is the glue that keeps the Sharks together and his experience is even more important at the moment, with the majority of the Sharks stars on Origin duty. Taylor has tackled himself to a standstill for the Tigers this season and if the Tigers had 17 Taylor’s, they would be going a lot better this season.
Stats That Matter

  • Cronulla are 5-8 ATS with a 10-3 under record while the Wests Tigers are 5-8 ATS with an 8-5 under record.
  • Cronulla have won three straight and 5 of the last 7 against the Tigers, including a controversial 22-16 win at Leichhardt just six weeks ago.
  • The last seven matches have all tallied 36 or more points.
  • Cronulla enter this without five Origin stars (Fifita, Graham, Holmes, Maloney and Bird) while the Tigers are missing two (Tedesco and Woods).
  • The Sharks have failed to cover their last seven games at Shark Park.
  • Since 2013, when favoured by more than 6.5 at Shark Park, Cronulla are 6-13 ATS.
  • The Sharks have covered just 1 of their last 5 as a double digit favourite at home.
  • The Tigers have covered 6 of their last 8 as a road underdog of 10 or more points.
Final Thoughts
The Tigers could have arguably beaten a full-strength Sharks side at Leichhardt in Round 9, making the 11.5 line seem inflated with the Sharks missing five crucial members of their sides. Of course the Tigers will be without Tedesco and Woods, but they still have enough stability across the park to prevent a blowout against an understrength Sharks side. The Wolf is very keen on the Tigers with the big start.
