NRL Preview
Melbourne Storm v North Queensland Cowboys

Saturday, June 17, 5:30pm (AEST), AAMI Park, Melbourne

The Wolf can’t understand how the NRL would allow this clash to be scheduled in the lead-up to Origin 2. Both teams are missing a host of Origin players with the Storm missing five (Slater, Cronk, Smith, Chambers, Glasby) and the Cowboys missing four (Thurston, Morgan, Cooper, Hess). The Storm will also be without Jordan McLean and Cheyse Blair after they picked up injuries in last week’s win over the Sharks.
History
The Storm have won three straight against the Cowboys as well as 14 of the last 19. The Storm won the most recent clash 16-10 in last year’s Qualifying Final in Melbourne.
Form
Melbourne sit atop the ladder with an 11-2 record on the back of the second-best defence in the NRL. The Storm have won their last three including an 18-13 upset win in the Grand Final replay against Cronulla at Shark Park. Melbourne are conceding an average of just 11 points per game at AAMI Stadium this season. North Queensland put together back-to-back wins for the first time since Round 5 with a dominant win over Parramatta. The Cowboys have conceded 18 points or fewer in 5 of their last 6 matches. North Queensland are 4-2 outside of Townsville this year.
Key Matchup
Cameron Munster v Lachlan Coote. Team lists weren’t out at the time of the preview, but whether Munster or/and Coote plays in the No.1 jersey or in the halves it won’t impact both of their roles here. Both the Storm and Cowboys are missing key players in the halves and it will be up to Munster and Coote to chime in to the attack and help direct their respective sides around the park.
Stats That Matter

  • Melbourne are 7-6 ATS with a 7-6 under record while North Queensland are 9-4 ATS with a 9-4 under record.
  • The Storm have won three straight against the Cowboys as well as 14 of the last 19.
  • The teams have met in the finals the last two seasons.
  • Six of the last seven matches have totalled 35 or fewer.
  • Both teams are missing a host of Origin players with the Storm missing five (Slater, Cronk, Smith, Chambers, Glasby) and the Cowboys missing four (Thurston, Morgan, Cooper, Hess).
  • The Storm are 9-1 under at home as a favourite of less than a converted try while they have covered 6 of 9 in the situation.
  • Melbourne are a remarkable 19-6 under at home after conceding fewer than 14 points..
Final Thoughts
The unders looks like the best play in this one, with both sides missing a host of players. The game plan will be simple for both of these understrength sides – focus on defence! Six of the last seven matches have totalled 35 or fewer. The Wolf is making the unders a five-chip special.
