NRL Preview
Canberra Raiders v Cronulla Sharks

Saturday, March 11, 7:30pm (AEDT), GIO Stadium, Canberra

Both of these sides were Round 1 losers and will want to get their respective seasons on track with a victory here. The Raiders welcome back Junior Paulo from suspension and will have long memories, after former Shark Michael Ennis mocked the ‘Viking Clap’ last year in Week 1 of the finals.
History
The Sharks have won 3 of the last 4 clashes against the Raiders, including last year’s 16-14 win at GIO Stadium in Week 1 of the NRL Finals. Cronulla have  also won four straight against Canberra at GIO Stadium.
Form
Canberra were desperately unlucky in their season opener against North Queensland in Townsville, going down 20-16 in golden point. The Raiders were resilient in defence and showed plenty of heart when short-handed against the title favourites. Cronulla are well in the throes of a premiership hangover, losing their opener against Brisbane 26-18. There were excuses with Valentine Holmes missing but the Sharks were just too ill-disciplined.
Key Matchup
Josh Hodgson v Jayden Brailey. Hodgson has been a revelation since he entered the NRL and is pivotal in plenty of the Raiders attacking raids. He had 2 try-assists in the loss to the Cowboys and made over 40 tackles. Brailey has been thrown in the deep end, after the retirement of Michael Ennis, and he hasn’t let anyone down. There’s not many tougher road trips than Canberra and it will be yet another learning curve for the young hooker.
Stats That Matter
Canberra lost but covered their opening match while going under while Cronulla lost, didn’t cover and went over. Small interstate underdogs cover at 63% since 2014. Night games go under at 60% in the first four rounds since 2012. Cronulla have won four straight against Canberra at Canberra Stadium. The Sharks have covered 2 of their last 10 night road games.
Final Thoughts
The Wolf was impressed with the fight and resilience of the Raiders in their Round 1 loss to the Cowboys and they only have to come up after that effort to get the job done against the Sharks. There’s no denying the Sharks recent record in Canberra, but the Raiders will be keen to make amends for last year’s finals loss to the Sharks and look stronger this week with the additions of Jack Wighton and Junior Paulo. The hangover will continue for the Sharkies.
