NRL Preview
Newcastle Knights v Gold Coast Titans

Saturday, March 11, 3pm (AEDT), McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

The Knights didn’t look like a side who recorded just the one win in 2016 as they took the Warriors to the wire in Round 1. Meanwhile, the Titans will be looking for an 80-minute performance, after they were blown off the park in the first half of their Round 1 clash against the Roosters.
History
The Knights and Titans have shared the honours in Newcastle dating back to May 2009 with 4 wins a piece and no side has strung together consecutive wins in the Hunter. The Titans did the double in 2016, winning the Round 1 clash at Cbus Super Stadium 30 12 and followed it up in Newcastle in Round 24, with a 26-6 victory. Titans enforcer Ryan James crossed for a double in the Titans’ 20-point win.
Form
Newcastle showed plenty of heart in their season opener against New Zealand, losing 26-22 after trailing 20-8 at the break. The Knights looked vastly improved on last season in the effort. The Titans, by contrast, were not at all ready for the Roosters, going down 28-0 at the half before a comeback saw them close within eight. They eventually went down 34-20 but the form of Jarryd Hayne will no doubt concern Neil Henry and the Titans faithful.
Key Matchup
Brock Lamb v Kane Elgey. Lamb showed some encouraging signs in the loss to the Warriors and there’s no doubt Knights coach Nathan Brown would have been pleased with the way he took on the line. Menawhile, Elgey made a steady return to the NRL, after an extended absence due to an ACL injury and did manage to cross for a try.
Stats That Matter
Newcastle covered in Round 1 while Gold Coast did not with both teams going over in total betting. Home underdogs of 4-plus in Rounds 1-4 since 2008 are 38-9 ATS. The Knights have covered 5 of their last 7 day games. Newcastle have covered just three of their last nine as a home underdog with the under 6-3 in those games. Home underdogs who scored 22 the start prior are 126-78 ATS since 2008 with the Knights 11-4 ATS in the situation including five straight covers since 2014.
Final Thoughts
The Knights were gutsy in New Zealand and won’t be the easy-beats of the competition, especially at home this year. The Titans have a few injury concerns and will be sweating on the fitness of Kevin Proctor. The start looks too much and The Wolf is happy to play the Knights as home underdogs here.
