NRL Preview
New Zealand Warriors v Sydney Roosters

Sunday, April 30, 2pm (AEST), MT Smart Stadium, Auckland

The Warriors were gallant in defeat against the table-topping Storm and can take plenty of positives out of the performance. Consistency has always been the issue for the Warriors, but they’re starting to run out of excuses with the strong squad they’ve assembled. The Roosters grinded out a 13-12 golden-point over the Dragons and face a massive danger game against the hot-and-cold Warriors.
History
The Warriors won both games against the Roosters last year and have won 9 of the last 15 against the Chooks. Three of the last four Mt Smart games have totalled over 46 points.
Form
The Warriors are down in 12th spot with a 3-5 record after dropping consecutive road games to Canberra and Melbourne. They have conceded at least 20 points in all bar one game this season. At Mt Smart, they are 3-1. The Sydney Roosters are up to third on the ladder following their dramatic 13-12 Anzac Day win. The Roosters defence has been key, allowing 12 or fewer in four of the last six. The Roosters have scored more than 20 just once since Round 2.
Key Matchup
Shaun Johnson v Mitchell Pearce. Johnson is starting to thrive and benefit from the partnership he is developing with Kieran Foran. He doesn’t have to try for the miracle play every time and can play a more structured game. Pearce kicked the match-winning field-goal in the Roosters golden-point win over the Dragons and was a threat to the Dragons defensive line all game, making two line-breaks. If he can produce another strong performance against the Warriors, a recall to the NSW team isn’t out of the question.
Stats That Matter
New Zealand are 2-6 ATS with a 5-3 under record while the Sydney Roosters are 4-4 ATS with a 5-3 under number. The Warriors won both games against the Roosters last year and have won 9 of the last 15 against the Chooks. Three of the last four Mt Smart games have totalled over 46 points. The Warriors have covered just 5 of their last 18 at Mt Smart with 7 of their last 8 at the ground going over. The Roosters though have covered just 1 of their last 7 day games.
Final Thoughts
The Warriors look the value as outsiders at home. The Roosters might have got the win on ANZAC Day, but struggled to put away the Dragons, who were missing Gareth Widdop for the second half. The Warriors showed enough in the loss to the Storm and the Foran/Johnson partnership continues to go from strength-to-strength.
