NRL Preview
St george Illawarra Dragons v Melbourne Storm

Sunday, April 30, 4pm (AEST), WIN Stadium, Wollongong

The Dragons suffered a heart-breaking golden-point loss and if that wasn’t bad enough, they’ve lost the influential Gareth Widdop for an extended period which puts a massive dent in their chances here. Meanwhile, the table-topping Storm are flying out in front with a 7-1 record and should be able to grind out a win here.
History
The Dragons have won just 6 of their last 27 against the Storm though did win the last encounter 20-10. The teams have played five straight encounters that have tallied 36 points or fewer. The Dragons have won the last three between the teams in Wollongong.
Form
Second-placed St George Illawarra had a five-game win streak ended on Anzac Day in a 13-12 loss to the Roosters that was all the more impressive considering they played most of the match without their star playmaker Gareth Widdop. The Saints have conceded more than 13 points just twice all season. Premiership front-runners Melbourne are the only team with seven wins this season and enter this off a gritty 20-14 win over New Zealand at home. The Storm have now won two straight after an 11-2 home loss to the Sharks. Melbourne have conceded more than 14 points just once this season.
Key Matchup
Josh Dugan v Billy Slater. Dugan was solid in patches for the Dragons in their loss to the Roosters and needs to hit his straps soon if he is to make the NSW Origin side. Slater was outstanding a fortnight ago against Manly, setting up three tries in the Storm’s win. He looked dangerous against the Warriors and a confidence Slater spells danger for the Dragons defence.
Stats That Matter
St George Illawarra are 6-2 ATS with a 4-4 total record while Melbourne are 4-4 ATS with a 6-2 under number. The Dragons have won just 6 of their last 27 against the Storm though did win the last encounter 20-10. The teams have played five straight encounters that have tallied 36 points or fewer. The Dragons have won the last three between the teams in Wollongong. The Dragons have covered 8 of their last 14 in Wollongong with the under hitting in 10 of those 14. They have covered 3 of 4 as a home underdog at the ground.
Final Thoughts
The Storm have a dominant record against the Dragons, while the Dragons looked lost for answers when Widdop left the field against the Roosters. They’ll keep this once close on the back of their brickwall defence, but the Storm’s spine is the best in the competition and should have too many points in them.
