NRL Preview
Brisbane Broncos v Wests Tigers

Friday, May 19, 7:50pm (AEST), Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

The Broncos produced a big second half to run down the Sea Eagles last week and could receive an extra boost this week, with James Roberts and Ben Hunt named in the squad to face the Tigers. The Tigers will be hoping they can put the Mitchell Moses saga behind them, granting him an immediate release on Tuesday. Despite the loss of Moses, the Tigers will be strengthened by the return of their Bulldogs-bound skipper Aaron Woods.
History
The Broncos have won 10 of their last 12 against the Tigers though Wests won the only clash last year 19-18. The last four at Suncorp have been split evenly.
Form
Brisbane got jumped badly by Manly at Suncorp last Saturday, trailing 14-0 after just nine minutes, but posted 24 unanswered second-half points to win the clash 24-14. Brisbane have now won five straight – four of them at Suncorp – where they have posted at least 24 points in each of them. The Broncos rank sixth in attack and fourth in defence. The Wests Tigers have won 2 of 5 under Ivan Cleary and just two of their last nine overall. They enter this off their worst loss under Cleary, an appalling 28-8 defeat at the hands of struggling South Sydney. The Tigers rank a poor 15th in attack and 14th in defence. The Tigers’ attack has been held to single digits four times this year.
Key Matchup
Darius Boyd v James Tedesco. Boyd has arguably been the best fullback in the competition this season and his game has gone to another level since he took on the Broncos captaincy. He’ll most likely get shifted to a wing in the QLD side, with Billy Slater in red-hot form as well. Tedesco had one of his worst games for the Tigers in last week’s loss to the Rabbitohs and will have a point to prove this week to show NSW selectors why he should be wearing the sky blue No.1 again.
Stats That Matter
Brisbane are 5-5 ATS with a 6-4 over record while the Wests Tigers are 4-6 ATS with a 7-3 under record. The Broncos have won 10 of their last 12 against the Tigers though Wests won the only clash last year 19-18. The last four at Suncorp have been split evenly. The Broncos are 35-23 ATS at Suncorp since 2013 with a 34-24 over number. When favoured by more than a converted try Brisbane are 18-11 ATS at Suncorp while as a double digit favourite they are 13-7 ATS. The Tigers have covered 4 of their last 5 interstate games but are 7-12 ATS since 2013. Interstate teams off a loss of 20-plus are 37-26 ATS with double digit outsiders 15-8 ATS. The Tigers have covered 9 of their last 11 night games. The Tigers have covered 6 of their last 9 off a loss of 20 or more points.
Final Thoughts
The Broncos will get the two competition points here and get some big ins with Roberts and potentially Hunt returning. However, the 14.5 start for the Tigers could be a line too big to cover for the Broncos, and the Tigers will be better this week, with the early return of skipper Aaron Woods sure to strengthen their pack in both attack and defence.
