Australia v Fiji

Many experts were predicting an Australia v New Zealand semi-final, but someone forgot to hand the script to Fiji. The Fijians caused a huge boilover in their quarter-final, grinding out a 4-2 victory over the heavily-favoured Kiwis. It was one of the greatest upsets in Rugby League World Cup history, but they’ll have to lift again for a daunting semi-final showdown against the Kangaroos. Jarryd Hayne was heavily involved in the win over New Zealand, with 18 runs for 111 metres and would love a strong performance against Australia. Meanwhile, it’s been underrated players like Eloni Vunakece and Viliame Kikau in the Fijian pack, who have been the unsung heroes in Fiji’s success and will be looking forward to the test against the Australian pack. The Kangaroos cruised through their quarter-final clash against Samoa with minimal fuss, shutting out the Samoans by 46-0. Sharks winger Valentine Holmes stole the show, scoring five tries and running for 263 metres. Complacency is the only thing that will stop Australia from recording a comfortable victory over Fiji, who have well and truly exceeded expectations already. Australia have played Fiji five times, with the average winning margin 54 points. It might not be a blowout like that here, but Australia should have no problem covering the -24.5 line.

Best: Australia -24.5 ($1.90)
Value: Australia 31-40 Points / Fiji 0-10 Points ($4.75)
Tonga v England

Tonga didn’t have it all their own way in last week’s 24-22 quarter-final win over a gallant Lebanon, but did enough to book a date against England in the semi-finals. It was the likes of Andrew Fifita (18 runs for 198 metres) and Jason Taumalolo (17 runs for 217 metres) who led the way once again and will be looking forward to the battle against Sam Burgess and co. England were too strong in their 36-6 quarter-final win over PNG, but their completion rate will need to improve if they’re to avoid an upset by the giant-killing Tongan side. English winger Jermaine McGillvary was very strong in the quarter-final win, with 232 running metres, 4 line-breaks, 2 try-assists and 2 tries for good measure. Sam Burgess also made a strong return from injury (17 runs for 161 metres) and his battle against the Tongan forwards is worth the price of admission alone. The Wolf is tipping the Tongan fairytale to come to an end in Auckland on Saturday night. Tonga could have easily lost to Lebanon, while England coach Wayne Bennett won’t let the possible opportunity to meet Australia in a World Cup Final to slip.

Best: England -4 ($1.90)
Value: England 1-12 ($2.90)
