Molde scored only one of three penalties against Dinamo Zagreb, while ten-man APOEL advanced to the play-offs on away goals, Rapid Wien ousted Ajax and Monaco eased through.
Ajax 2-3 Rapid Wien (agg: 4-5)
• Ajax's run of five successive UEFA Champions League group stage appearances will not extend to six after this home defeat, two-goal Louis Schaub landing the knockout blow with 13 minutes remaining.
• Frank de Boer's young team had rallied from 2-0 down – like Rapid did last week – thanks to an expertly-taken volley from Arkadiusz Milik and Nemanja Gudelj's powerful shot, but Schaub decided the contest with a great strike of his own. Robert Berić had headed the Green and Whites into an early lead.
AS Monaco 4-0 Young Boys (agg: 7-1)
• Ivan Cavaleiro and Milan loanee Stephan El Shaarawy scored on their home debuts for Monaco as last season's quarter-finalists eased through. Layvin Kurzawa and Anthony Martial were also on target for the Ligue 1 club.
Champions route:
Molde 3-3 Dinamo Zagreb (agg: 4-4, Dinamo win on away goals)
• Molde squandered two penalties, scored another and had Vegard Forren sent off in a remarkable match in which their recovery from 3-0 down was ultimately to no avail.
• Ola Kamara skied the first spot kick after eight minutes and by the time Harmeet Singh's attempt was saved by Eduardo late in the first half, the Norwegian side were trailing 3-1 after quick-fire strikes from Marko Pjaca, Dinamo captain Arijan Ademi and Marko Rog.
• Mohamed Elyounoussi made it 3-2 after the break when he converted from the spot, adding to Etzaz Hussain's 43rd-minute reply. Forren was dismissed with a little over a quarter of an hour remaining, but still Tor Ole Skullerud's side came again, equalising through Kamara after a long pass from Eirik Hestad. Dinamo stood firm, though, seeing out five minutes of added time to book their place in the play-offs.
APOEL 0-1 Midtjylland (agg: 2-2, APOEL win on away goals)
• Stunned by an early goal, APOEL resisted for an hour with ten men in temperatures of 35C.
• Midtjylland got off to the perfect start, scoring after three minutes when Erik Sviatchenko headed in a Jakob Poulsen free-kick. APOEL's task became that much stiffer following the dismissal of Vinicius, who was shown a straight red card for a foul on Pione Sisto, but the Nicosia outfit held on and are now one tie away from a fourth group stage campaign.
