Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that Sergio Ramos may have used his former club in order to get a better deal at Real Madrid, as per AS.
The Spanish World Cup winner was heavily linked with United earlier in the summer after reports emerged that the player had fallen out with Florentino Perez at Madrid.
However, no move to United materialised and it now looks like Ramos is set to extend his contract in Madrid after all, leaving many to question if he ever intended to move to the Premier League.
AS reports that Ramos asked Real to listen to offers for him, knowing of United’s reported interest, and had even agreed personal terms with the Red Devils in the event that a deal did come off.
In a new twist, it has emerged that Ramos held fresh talks with Perez during Real’s pre-season tour of China and a new deal seems to be in the horizon.
Former England international Ferdinand is clearly suspicious of Ramos’ true intentions and has questioned if the defender ever really intended to move to United.
Ferdinand told The Sun, via AS: “I think Ramos was just up for a new contract with Real Madrid and may have been using United to help him get a better deal”.
United and Real are also locked in negotiations over David de Gea although that move also seems to be at a stalemate despite a summer of speculation.
United look set to start the season without Ramos and with De Gea on Saturday when they host Spurs, a scenario that looked unlikely at one point.
