Midfield star Ollie Wines is out for the rest of the season after Port Adelaide sent him for shoulder reconstruction surgery.
The 20-year-old was injured in the win over St Kilda last weekend, being subbed out of the match at quarter-time.
He had his surgery in Adelaide on Wednesday and the Power, who are 6/1 to finish in the top eight, say he will be in rehab until the start of pre-season training in mid-November.
Head of high performance Darren Burgess said: "He'll be in a sling for between four and six weeks, and then he'll begin running and movement after that. It's generally a 12-week process to get him back into contact and normal training."
Burgess said though it would have been possible for Wines to play on with his shoulder problem, the better option was for him to have an operation straight away.
The club are long-shots to make the finals, sitting in 12th place on the ladder, so there was no up-side to risking him.
Burgess added: "People have played with them in the past, but given his age, the combative nature of his game style and our no risk policy in situations like this – the need to put his health and wellbeing first – it was probably an easy decision to make in the end."
Port Adelaide was widely considered a finals contender before the start of the 2015 season, but with eight wins and nine losses it is 12th on the ladder after round 18.
Power coach Ken Hinkley said after the Saints match that Wines had wanted to return to the action after suffering his injury, but he had overruled him.
"We're not going to run the risk with a bloke of your standing within our football club, it's too big a price to pay to send Ollie Wines back out there," he added.
Port Adelaide are 5/4 to win their next match against Western Bulldogs, who are 17/25
