Course
The PGA Tour will be in North Carolina for the second consecutive week as the  Donald Ross designed Sedgefield Country Club hosts the Wyndham Championship. The Course is just over 7100 yards in Par-70 and is considered an excellent venue by most of the players.
The course features some narrow fairways and even though the length of the course is not too daunting, it is not a course to be taken lightly. The greens are fast and have a fair amount of undulation to them, adding another layer of difficulty. Rain is almost certainly expected for the first two rounds of the tournament and could even be a factor throughout the weekend.
Tournament Overview
The field after a major championship is usually a little weak and more so if there is another big tournament on the horizon soon after. This is exactly the case with the Wyndham Championship that is slotted between the PGA Championship and the fast approaching FedEx Cup Playoffs.
A weak field over the last few years has meant that some truly left field names have emerged as winners. Previous winners include the likes of Arjun Atwal in 2010, Patrick Reed in 2013, Camilo Villegas in 2014, Davis Love III in 2015 and Si Woo Kim in 2016.
This is not a tournament where bombers tend to do well and accuracy is instead rewarded. It is also important to get off to a good start in this tournament because leading halfway seems to be one of the most important predictors to eventual winners. In a weak field and a tournament where first-time winners are not uncommon, the Wolf would definitely suggest some In-Play betting at the halfway mark.
Stats That Matter
The number one stat to check out for this week’s tournament will be driving accuracy. The Wolf believes that players who make the least number of mistakes and play consistent, if not aggressive, golf are the ones most likely to be in contention for the win. Making the greens in regulation to give themselves the best chance of making birdies and then strokes gained putting to see who has their short games in order are the other two keys to winning this week.
Scrambling and par 4 scoring should also be taken into account. Si Woo Kim was 6th in driving accuracy and 8th in greens in regulation when he won this tournament eventually totaling a very impressive 21 under par score of 259.
Predictions
The bookmakers favourite is Henrik Stenson at $15.00 and it is easy to see why. He is a big fish in a small pond, easily capable of destroying everyone else. The thing is, though, that he has had a poor 2017 struggling with injuries and just does not seem attractive enough at this price.
The Wolf is instead backing Kevin Kisner at $17.00 as his top selection. He led the PGA Championship for three rounds before a terrible Sunday ended his run. There is no doubt about Kevin Kisner’s form this season after he finished T7 at the PGA Championship, won the Dean and Deluca Invitational and was runner up in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
He also has two top-10 finishes at the Wyndham Championship in his last two attempts. The stats also back Kisner with him being 14th in driving accuracy, 40th in greens in regulation and 18th in strokes gained putting. In relation to this week’s field he would be in the top 5 of each category!
Keegan Bradley at $34.00 is an excellent option as a roughie. Bradley had a T8 at the Travelers and T5 at Quicken Loans before dropping off a little in form. This is one of the courses that could really suit his style of play since he will not be pressured to go long from the tee. Keegan ranks 24th in driving accuracy and 23rd in greens in regulation but has struggled with the putter. Finished 46th in his only appearance here last year but if he can finally get the short stick going we could see him back in the winner’s circle come Sunday.
Now for the long shot… The Wolf had a hard time with this one but finally settled on Lucas Glover at $51.00. Glover finished T33 in the PGA Championship last week and was T25 at the John Deere Classic. He also had a couple of missed cuts before that and so his form has been a little inconsistent. Statistically, though Glover has some excellent numbers to back his claim. He is 35th in driving accuracy and a very impressive 5th in greens in regulation. Most importantly he loves this course and has played the Wyndham Championship every year since 2004. His last two finishes here were T16 and T22 but he does have two top-10 finishes here in the past.
