West Coast expect youngster Liam Duggan to be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
The 18-year-old suffered damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee at the weekend while playing for East Perth in the WAFL.
Scans confirmed the injury and though he does not need surgery the Eagles are ready to sit him out for the remainder of the season rather than push him to return for a potential finals campaign.
The club's general manager of football Craig Vozzo said it was disappointing for the Eagles, who are 11/2 to win the Grand Final, and for their first-round pick from last year's AFL Draft.
"He's had a terrific first year to date. Liam is going to be a pretty important part of our football club moving forward, so we're not keen to take too much risk with it, which probably means his season is over," he said.
The Victorian, who was recruited from the Western Jets, has played 12 games in his first season of AFL football and gathered 25 disposals against Greater Western Sydney in round 5.
West Coast have had better news over the three players who picked up knocks in their 31-point win over Collingwood at the weekend.
Scott Selwood (knee), Josh Hill (shoulder) and Xavier Ellis (elbow) will all be monitored during the week but are expected to be available for Sunday's meeting with Sydney.
Patrick McGinnity, who has been out for seven weeks with a broken wrist, has been cleared to return to action and Sam Butler will come into contention against the fourth-placed Swans following a two-week absence with a hip strain.
The Eagles are 11/25 to beat Sydney, who are 9/5.
