Halfback Adam Reynolds spurred South Sydney Rabbitohs on to a 24-8 win over St George Illawarra to take his side, at least temporarily, into the NRL top four.
Reynolds came up trumps after Josh Dugan's 69th-minute try had brought the Dragons to within four points at a wet SCG.
He produced a solo try, catching his own grubber in the 73rd minute, and kicked to set up another try for Luke Keary with three minutes to go.
The Rabbitohs didn't emerge unscathed from the game, though, as winger Aaron Gray picked up a hamstring problem and Cameron McInnes was forced off with an ankle injury early in the second half.
Coach Michael Maguire was proud of the resolve shown by his side, who are 7.50 to win the premiership. "St George had a completion rate up around 94 per cent, so it was a game we had to really stay at," he said.
"We probably gave away a few penalties there, particularly with them coming out of yardage. So we had to stay at it. And I was pleased how the boys did that."
The defeat meant the Dragons, who have now lost six in a row, slipped outside the top eight for the first time since round 4.
The Rabbitohs took an eighth-minute through Dylan Walker's try but missed a golden chance to add another when Greg Inglis spilt the ball after John Sutton broke into the backfield soon afterwards.
Reynolds tacked on a penalty goal before the Dragons boosted their hopes in the shadows of half-time as Benji Marshall sent Justin Hunt over.
South Sydney scored their second try when Reynolds and Inglis combined to set up winger Alex Johnston.
The Rabbitohs are 1.25 to win their next match against Newcastle Knights, who are 4.00.
