NRL Preview
Brisbane Broncos v Gold Coast Titans

Friday, April 14, 7:50pm (AEST), Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane

The Titans can’t take a trick with injuries at the moment and as a result they were comprehensively beaten by the Raiders 42-16 last week. They have an awful record against the Broncos and will most likely take on “Big Brother” with another makeshift squad. The Broncos will get an early taste of life without Ben Hunt after he was ruled out for 6-8 weeks with a hamstring injury.
History
The Broncos have won five straight and 13 of the last 15 against the Titans. Gold Coast last beat Brisbane at Suncorp in 2007, dropping 10 straight since. The Broncos won last year’s Round 5 clash 24-16 at Robina and followed it up with a 44-28 victory in the Elimination Final at Suncorp, with both Corey Oates and Jordan Kahu crossing for doubles.
Form
Brisbane are up inside the Top 8 after they advanced to 3-3 with a stunning 32-8 win over the Sydney Roosters. That win followed a tough series of losses that included one score defeats at Melbourne and at Canterbury. Gold Coast have been just gutted by injuries and as such are buried in 15th position with a 1-5 record. Their defence is clear worst in the NRL with the Titans conceding an average of 30.33ppg.
Key Matchup
Kodi Nikorima v Ashley Taylor. Nikorima will get his chance in the No.7 jersey and can make it his own over the next couple of months due to the extended absence of Ben Hunt. Nikorima is more of a ball runner than an organiser and it will be interesting to see how he gels with Anthony Milford. Taylor is a future Queensland No.7 and was the one that got away from the Broncos. Taylor has had a try-assist in each of the Titans six matches this season and has 11 try-assists for the year. Taylor will want a big performance against his former club, but can’t do it all on his own.
Stats That Matter
Brisbane are 3-3 ATS with a 3-3 total number while the Titans are 2-4 ATS with a 5-1 over number. The Broncos have won five straight and 13 of the last 15 against the Titans. Gold Coast last beat Brisbane at Suncorp in 2007, dropping 10 straight since. The last five matches have all resulted in wins of 8 or more. Since 2014 Brisbane are 16-8 ATS at Suncorp when favoured by 6.5 or more while they are 12-4 ATS when favoured by 10 or more. The Titans have covered just 1 of their last 5 road games in Queensland. The Titans have covered just 5 of their last 14 on the road getting 10 or more.
Final Thoughts
The Broncos look good things here, especially after the way they dismantled the Roosters last week. The Titans have a terrible record against the Broncos and have too many injuries to compete. The Broncos will miss Ben Hunt, but not enough to struggle against the depleted Titans.
